View Full Version : Better Than 13th Door

This is about Slaughterhouse gulch, but I must preface it with a comment about it's sister haunt (right next door) 13th Door. I must say I am sadly disappointed with the 13th door. I have heard all these rave reviews, but I remain unimpressed after having gone through it myself. Maybe I heard too much hype about how great it was, but I felt there was too many animatronics. There is a very human element to haunting, and that is timing, and reading the people going through the haunt. You lose so much of that when you take the easy (dare I say lazy?) way out by using animatronics. There were a few scary parts, but all in all, it wasn't that great. The redeeming portion of this entire trip was the random decision to run into slaughterhouse gulch afterwards. . .
This haunt was much better, and much more creatively done. While I would minus a few points for theme (or lack thereof) it was a decent haunt. I think they could come up with a much better name than slaughterhouse gulch, as this haunt was, for hte most part, a recreation of several scary movies. I don't want to give away too much of the haunt, but I only had two complaints with slaughterhouse gulch.
1.) last time I saw the movie, the girl from the ring was a thin girl with long black hair . . . not a chubby one with short blond hair. Even just a black wig would have made it a little better in my opinion.
2.) Two haunted houses next door to each other, and both with chainsaws chasing you out the door at the end. . . perhaps move one chainsaw to the middle of the house, or even better, only have a chainsaw in one of them? The chainsaw is way overdone anyways.
All in all, Slaughterhouse gulch recieves a 4 out of 5 stars in my book. 13th door was a different story . . . maybe 2 out of 5 stars on a good day.

Maybe they had just seen that lesser-known horror flick, The Donut Ring...?

I vote that one of them has to feature "Crazy Guy with Doggie Poo On A Stick". That always scared me when I was a kid.

that is just pure ****ing mean. I can't believe anyone would put "the chubby" girl. Thats a horrible thing to say and I guarantee if you go to another review web site, they will tell a different story about the house. Thats just rude, and I Thought going through it she did an awesome job, scared the daylights out of me. Well done!! Not every part of every house is going to be 100% accurate. And Unlike other directors of other haunts *cough...field of corpse....cough* I dont see their director advertising the holy hell of the curse of the slaughter house gulch. Sorry you didn't really like the house, I know me personally I really enjoyed it. Well done slaughter house! now about the 13th door, so what about animatronics....they work and work very well....if you go to the haunted mansion they have a lot too. Guess that house wouldn't be your cup of tea either. I like having more than just actors in it makes it seem like they took more time to make it good rather than just put up some walls, or just use a cornfiled and throw some people in it and call it house. again just my opinion

I don't feel that border' meant any disrespect by that comment. If the girl is chubby, then dagnabbit, she's chubby. She may very well be an excellent actor and a fine, upstanding citizen. I believe that he was simply disappointed by the lack of authenticity , since it was supposed to be The Ring that they were portraying.
That's when I screwed up and made what I thought was a funny and harmless joke. I apologize for any offense that may have been taken.
I work at Safeway and every day I see oodles of people that range in size from "chubby" to "gargantuan". Just today I saw a man who must weigh in at around 400 pounds, all beet-red and sweaty. It's just a fact that the American lifestyle (excessive consumerism) has had a "super-sizing" effect on a large sector of the population.
It's a shame too, that we throw out hundreds of dollars worth of food on a daily basis. That's just in my place of employment-and it's a small store.

Thank you for the apology, i know that she will appreciate it, who ever she is and if she reads this. I found that comment to be outlandish and quite rude. I myslf don't have the problem with weight, and honestly I am a little on the small size. But overall that comment was very rude and i fell very unneccessary and I appreciate the fact you took the time to realize that you were wrong for making that statement. thank you!

hey Rob, wanna lock this topic until people decide to quit turning this thread into a pissing contest?
Side Note: Dont base your opinion on one night at 13th either, especially at the beginning of the year. Im one of 6 actors that arent knew this year, and not all 6 work at 13th, some at Slaughterhouse. Everyone else is fresh to this house, and since its not like we have time to rehearse before hand, cut them some slack.
Maybe you should come through again, seeing as its a different friggin cast every night, and some people are still learning how to scare.
And then, if after maybe 3 goes, you dont like it, write a review.
But one night at the beginning of the season, please, my dog knows how to review better than that.
...damnit, didnt i just rat people out for pissing contests...
Whatever, i just got back from work, and im grumpy.
Now to go put holes in the Pyramid head headpiece so i can actually see you people when i chase you this weekend.

Ok I understand your frustration about a review on a night when the cast could have been mostly a new cast.
but hmmmmmmmmm
you want them to not only pay $15 once but twice, and then after that $30 is spent, spend another $15 so $45 for the right to add a comment of the house?
Sorry but Like Witch has said in another thread you should get your monies worth every showing. A review is just that be it good or bad it is the opinion of the buyer weather they spent $15 or $45 that does not matter.
I would like my opinion to count count just the same as would you I am sure on any other topic if it wasn't haunted houses.

Also, Rob, it appears there is no 13th Door under Reader Haunt Reviews... It really had me scratching my head earlier lol.

First off, yea, Tye, i noticed that too, what the fig-newton guys? Lets get a 13th door review up.
ANd Hmmmmm, thats a good point to bring up.
You know what, if you come through to do a review, and are in the same situation as he/she/it who started this thread (no offense with the gender confusion, i just have no clue who you are), and wanna come through later in the season to see how the house is when weve all gotten back into our little characters and found our niche, you know what, PM me that day, and i'll tell kathy you're coming, and i'll get you in for free.
i wont do this lots, so dont try this to get free tickets.
And witch is right in that philosophy, but incorrect on its probability.
I expect a perfect show when i go to the buell, cause people have had time to rehearse for months.
75% of the '06 13th and Slaughterhouse staff are new. Theyve had no time to rehearse. were still figuring out where people are best.
This is also, from a business standpoint, why more people are encouraged to come, and more advertising is put out, later in the season.
Im not saying witch is wrong, its the way things should be, and she is correct. But i know it cant always happen this way.
If the full cast was seasoned veterans, then there would be no problem.
I do find the way 13th and slaughterhouse are run is a bit odd. If it were me, id call us all in 2 weeks before, and start working on characters and stuff, so we can be closer to our prime. But hey, nothings perfect, especially in my world.
Also, i apologize for my standoffish attitude earlier.
I work a job i loath every day and the only reason i dont quit is nothing better has come by yet, or is within reach, and i have a need for cash.
Every job ive had is like that.
So the 13th door is my release, its my time to hang out with people i enjoy and do something i very rarely get the chance to do, ACT.
So i get a bit defensive of my "home" and all of my family there. I might not be the least biased person to talk to about a negative side of 13th...but i will try to be fair. I just get so irritable anymore and i get really defensive of that place.
So if i seemed like an ass earlier, i do apologize.
Now to go put more holes in my head, hehe.
Another guarenteed disaster

Ok being called chubby isnt rude...being called fat is. I am a chubby or pleasantly plump or big boned or whatever you call it. Second of all..if we are going to start jumping down people cause they now have the section to do a review we are defeating the purpose of the idea. To each its own. And if we are going to stop threads we are then tampering with the process also. Chill people. And besides, I know Robe wasnt being mean... cause he loves me with warts and all!!

no prob!!!
Acting is a great way to release some pent up frustration!! And I agree the show does get better as month goes on, but at the same time the acotrs should always be putting forth thier best effort they can give at that time.
I don't think that the op's opinion isn't really a bad review of the actors it's a bad review of the house itself. actually if anything it's a good review of the actors because they want more actors and less animatronics.
now go punch some holes!

You want us to base our opinions on 3 visits to each Haunt on different nights you are insane! There is not enough time or money. This is an open forum for people to help inform people on which haunts to attend and if one person has a poor experience they are allowed to post their opinion. When I visit your haunt I will post my review, after a single visit, good or bad. So learn to accept the criticism and learn from what the people have to say instead of trying to close a topic after a single bad review.

True, nobody expects 100% fluidity but if you're going to make an attraction based on movie characters (so I've heard) then you're taking a serious gamble. You had better at least try to cast people right, especially when, as obsessed has said, it could be an easy fix in costuming.
Chubby... word?! WW is right, obsessed made a comment about a physical physique of a character portrayal, it's not like he said "last time I checked the ring was a tiny girl with black hair not a dump truck with pink hair." Now that would be mean. Funny, but mean.
