View Full Version : Curse Of The Trail Dust Steak House

Unlike it's sister Haunt next door, this was slightly scarier than the Haunts that my sister made for me in my parent's attic when we were kids. A couple of the actors were even pretty good and looked decently like the film slashers that they were supposed to be. There were even a few rooms that were decent like Michael Myers' room and the boiler room for Freddie.

This haunt did have quite a bit of problems however. There was WAY too much random crap hanging from above, burlap, curtains, clear plastic hefty bags, etc. I was saying to my friends as we were going through that I wish that the bags at least had some bodies in them, that way it would have felt more like a haunt instead of the “Hanging Trash Gardens of Babylon”. Also, there is a problem when the most interesting thing to look at for large chunks of the haunt is the lack of a ceiling and the warehouse roof above. This haunt had a very unpolished feeling to it, but it was better than the emptiness of the one next door. A few of the actors were not very exciting, just making some grunting noises and looking less than enthused. I don't remember dude in the "SAW" room doing anything other than grunting and maybe saying a word or two. When I left, I was fearing that I was just spoiled because the only haunts I had been to for the previous two years were the "Beast" and the "Edge of Hell" in KC (if you want to go on a weekend road trip to visit haunts I very much recommend these). However all of the other haunts that we went to on the same evening actually felt like there was more than a shoestring budget.

My question is where the pyramid head guy go? He was outside wandering about abusing what appeared to be a very large "StarFire swords" battle axe, but he was never in either of the haunts when we went through (They desperately needed more actors in the 13th door). Then he was also gone from the parking lot when we were leaving.

Overall, I would say that even with the multiple haunt discounts, these haunts are too unpolished and sparse on the scares to justify what they are charging for admission. For my money, I would rather spend another $10 and go up to the Primitive Fear complex and get 3 Quality haunts.

It sounds like the people running this haunt have several other haunts around town. My advice if they actually want to have a quality haunt, pool the resources to make something worth visiting. Right now the haunts felt way too spread thin and like they had to be made on the cheap.

Holy crap, how did you know it was from starfire?

And yea, i was never really inside cause im a bit taller than the support rafters will allow. And depending on when you left the house, i may have been breaking people in slaughterhouse (not my choice, i didnt wanna leave my warm little costume).

ANy critique on that thing though, it was my first night with the full costume?

Well I was there with my magnets at the ready so I was disappointed when I came out and didn't see you. Seriously though, I wrote this in a review but I'll tell you know: I thought that the pyramid itself was much better than I'd imagined (to be honest I was expecting something similar to that cardboard picture that I had displayed). The axe was great (even though I felt sorry for it with the grinding but it really added to the overall effect). The only flaw that I saw was the pants, they were a little too short and we could see your feet a bit on top of the stilts so if there is any way to improve this then you are way ahead of the game. But in the end, job well done!

I agree with Perm good job. My only suggestion is that you change the color of the paint a bit, from a distance it really makes it look like a cardboard box on your head. But over all it was excellent. Good Work!

Thanks guys, both of you. That thing was really an expirement and a half for me cause i am FAR from having a degree in engineering or anything like that, so formatting the helm was kinda tough.

As for the pants, yea. I was gonna try to get something to go all the way down but didnt get the chance before friday night. I am gonna try to fix that this weekend, at least cap my shoes off with gaffers tape or something, so that way it all looks connected, but im really just gonna try to find something that will splay out and cover from the pantleg down to the midsection of the stilt.

As for the paint, im still trying to fiddle with that, see if i can get a better rusted iron color. Im no paint whiz, so it might never change.

But im really glad you guys enjoyed, and thanks for the reviews.

I'll be romping around as Phead again this friday and saturday, and i WONT be disappearing for an hour during the night this time, cause i told kathy i refuse to give people breaks anymore, since no one takes the correct amount of time. Id rather be outside as pyramid head. It took a lot of time and money to make that, im not wasting it.

Thanks again you guys, come back later in the season to check me out if you wish, see how the improvements look. I'll be running around in the cold wet weather, hehe.

One of the cheap effects that I've employed is to use a reddish brown paint and water it down (with a thinning agent) and apply it with some sort of sprayer. It's trial and error but once you get the idea you can get closer to the look your trying to achieve.

Of course, you could always just leave it out the next couple of nights depending on how well it was welded (or were those pop rivets?).

I thought that was the look you wanted so I looked for an Oxidation agent and couldn't find anything that wouldn't dry clean your lungs.

If you have the time I'd definitely try to go the natural route. I've heard that salt water may accelerate the process but it might turn it black instead of the rusty color you want. If you have scraps try a few different techniques. Good Luck!

First, Perm.

Neither Welds or Pop Rivets. Its all Bolts and Nuts. And i'll see if i can just grab a brown paint and hit it with both the paint and the oxidized red at once. Thanks for the tip.

Mordred.

Thank you for the tip, saddly, its Sheet metal, and that stuff does NOT rust easily, nor do i really want rust hanigng off my head, hehe. Some people are unbelievably stupid, so i smack the axe on the headpiece, so that they realize its metal.

Thank you both for the input, and i look foreward to meeting more of you in the upcoming weekends.

ANd folks, dont be shy to come up and go "hey, im _insert name here_"..i might not respond, but i might nod. I would like to know who im chatting with.

I'll await more critiques so i can hone it to perfection.

Angelcakes-You're the absolute only reason I have to plop down fifteen smackeroos to see this. Don't disappoint me, pal. Can you shorten your stilts to accomodate the tight confines of the interior? You'd be a lot more intimidating in an enclosed scenario.

Oh, I am definately coming through at some point, if only just to see how the finished product turned out.

Hehe, so much attention, i might be blushing.

Rob. Saddly they are at the LOWEST they can get. I'll see if i can wedge myself into the building, but i doubt it. I will chase you all around outside though, i promise.

Kathy tried to tell me i only get to do half the shift this saturday cause my friend is doing pinhead. HAHAHAHAH. I'll be there all night my loves.

Hope to see you all soon

I have me a 4' single blade battle axe from those guys. They are my favorite weapon makers, they actually look useable instead of just flashy.

I did like your Pyramid head, I've never seen the movie or played the games, but it was still cool. I agree with a couple of the other posts about the color. I had to get pretty close to realize that it was in fact metal and not some cheap cop out. I like the other idea about actually letting it rust a bit to get the proper look vs. paint. My worrie though would be to seal it after the rust affect so that it does not rust too much. But I'm no artist or metal worker so what do I know?
