Case in point: The 2004 re-make of George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead". This film had everything that I could ask for from a modern horror film. Great effects, terrific cast, creative new thrills, a story that doesn't beat you over the head explaining everything- this is how you oughta do it if you absolutely have to riff on old material. I also think that fast-moving zombies are much more frightening than the old school lumbering, drooling kind.
Some other favorite zombie films of mine are, in no particular order:
"Shaun of the Dead"-a comedy with plenty of authentic scares and a lot of heart.
"28 Days Later"-I do consider this a zombie movie, just not in the traditional sense of the word.
"I Walked with a Zombie"-a very atmospheric and creepy classic.
"The Dead Hate the Living!"-A lot of fun, with great effects on a shoestring budget.
Of course, ALL of the films by the Zombie Master himself, George A. Romero.
Any other Zombiephiles walking among us?

Speaking of Remakes, id like to pose something. I just went over a list of stuff on IMDB, and i think i know the next grouping of Horror/Thriller Remakes......not ones im looking foreward to i might add.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers: They made the original in 56...they made another in 78.....arent we due for ANOTHER remake of it.

The Thing: 51, 82, i could see 08 being next....

The Exorcist: They keep making more installments, might as well go back like with the omen. Maybe now it will actually scare me adverse to the 73 film, which sucked more balls than Andy Dick at the Y.

The Shining: I dunno, they are remaking another one of Nicholson's best Roles, THE JOKER, with Heath Ledger in the next BATMAN....and i think mixing that with (AGAIN, that piece of shit) the omen, its about time Colorado got some more world wide recognition.

Just my 2 cents.

By the way, DAWN OF THE DEAD OWNED...had to shout out on that one.

Speaking of Zombies.....anyone interested in the game Dead Rising....its you in a Mall for 72 hours with thousands upon thousands of zombies...and anything you can grab is a weapon.........awesome

I really enjoy Zombie and Undead movies (Zombies, Vampires and Mummies). It has to be my favorite genre of movies, though no one has made a decent scary Vampire or Mummy movie in a long time. I enjoyed the remake of Dawn of the Dead, Zach Snyder took the fast moving Zombies from 28 Days Later and made a great re-telling of the George Romero classic. As for most remakes they stink like last weeks garbage, I won't see most remakes it is a waste of time and money just to see a classic movie destroyed by being reshot scene by scene i.e. The Omen and Psycho are the two that come to mind, I don't know if the new Wicker Man is the same way, but still what is the point if you have seen the original film, the surprise ending is no longer a surprise. I won't give it away for those of you who haven't seen the movie. What I am trying to say that 99% of remakes are bad, Netflix or rent the old classics they are by far better movies.

John Carpenter's "The Thing" was considered a flop at the time. Of course, it was up against the likes of "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan" and a little feller named "E.T." It was probably a bit too downbeat for Summer audiences looking for the typical feelgood fare.
As for the character of "The Joker", I feel that any actor should be free to interpret this classic comic book villain. Look at how many different actors have played "James Bond" or "Dracula" or "Sherlock Holmes".
Nicholson was terrific with his version, but I did feel that he was a bit, well, pudgy for the part. I've always envisioned the Joker as being thin and tall, and totally psychotic. Besides, do people say that Nicholson was stealing Caesar (from the TV series) Romero's thunder? Hardly. That guy didn't even bother to get rid of that bushy moustache for his turn as the "Clown Prince of Crime".
As for "The Exorcist", it a classic horror film that completely envelops the viewer in its own reality. All attempts to recapture the experience of this masterpiece have failed miserably.
"The Shining" was retold as a mini-series in 1997, Steven Weber played Jack Torrance. The Stanley Kubrick film contained one of Jack Nicholson's greatest performances ever. This movie is perpetually enjoyable, with a perfect cast (Scatman Crothers, so wonderful) and powerful feeling of isolation and mounting suspense.
I really need to cave in and get me an XBox 360 one o' these days. "Dead Rising" looks like a fantastic game.

For anyone on this type of board, if you have the means, Dead Rising is the reason to get a 360. When I heard this concept for a game I thought the game developers sat down and asked each other "What game would Noch like to play?". "Dawn of the Dead" (Romero's first and now the remake) is one of my favorite movies ever from any genera. This game is as close as you will get to those classic films (more so the Romero version than the remake because of the style of zombie).

The sound effects are perfect, when you smack a zombie with a shovel it gives that satisfying "Clang", or slice them bastards with the chainsaw it's music to the ears. Also the visuals are really stunning. It really is amazing how many characters can be on the screen at once. And the best, it's the sheer numbers and varieties of weapons available. You can find anything from Baseball bats, Shovels, Swords and 2x4's to Machine guns and Chainsaws. Hell even running over thousands of zombies with random vehicles you find in the parking garage is fun.

The only trouble with the game is the save system. There is only one save slot and killing hordes of zombies is so much fun, I get side tracked doing that and miss the story and then have to reload.

All in all, this game is fantastic. If you don't have it, rent it (and a 360 if need be) and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if you buy a copy for your self because of it.

I actually liked the remake of The Hills Have Eyes. and next year, Rob Zombie is directing the re-imaging of the original Halloween. THAT should be very cool. I also heard that a remake of The Birds was in talks. I really liked TCM remake as well. very gritty.

others that I have heard:

Day of the Dead (by same director of remake of Dawn of the Dead)
The Entity
Evil Dead (done by Ted Raimi i think)
The Blob

not to mention the sequel 28 Weeks Later.

Up until now, with the releases of Prey and Dead Rising I didn't really even care about getting the
'360, what with PS3 just around the corner. But oh my stars and bananas, things are definitely looking up for XBox. Now, I need a second job so that I can afford these luxuries! <-which makes me realize that I'd have no leisure time with which to enjoy them. *heavy sigh*

I really love Hitchcock's The Birds-and haven't seen that sequel called "Land's End" (?), something like that. It could be really great, as the original's effects are very old hat. Just don't try pulling another trick like the pointless Psycho remake.
Day of the Dead <-If Zack Snyder is directing this one, then it's guaranteed awesomeness.
The Blob remake from the 80s has some very cool special effects, one in particular involving a clogged drain-and I don't think I'm giving anything away by saying that.
Evil Dead is perfect as is, in all of it's fever-pitched low-budget glory.
The Entity I vaguely remember this movie, except for the female lead being thrown around and raped by an invisible evil spirit . Hmmmm, there must have been more to the story- but that's the only impression that stayed with me. Strange choice, but Hollywood does seem to be scraping the bottom of the Idea Barrel these days.
The Changeling from 1980, starring George C. Scott is another one that's being regurgitated. I haven't even seen it, but it has a lot of fans.
Thanks, ::jason::!

The Hills Have Eyes<- I enjoyed it too, gorgeous horror makeup, for one thing-and to Blazes with all those nay-sayers.

Duhhhh...waitaminnit, you mean real, as in the person...*slaps forehead* gosh, I can be a ditz. Ah well, so it's more of a punishment than a prize!

They're re-making The Changeling? Oh no. The original is awesome - I don't see how they can do it without jacking it all up.
