For me it was the classic 1931 Frankenstein with Boris Karloff playing the monster. I loved all of the horror movies Boris Karloff played in!
The reason this one was my favorute was because it not only had suspense, and a small element of fear, but it also made you feel bad for the monster. I remember seeing Frankenstein getting chased by the town lynch mob to the windmill, and when they set it on fire and he's trapped up there, you honestly feel bad for him. When I was a kid, I used to watch it over and over hoping it would end differently for him.

Have you ever seen any of the classics that Boris Karloff did?

I don't know why because the story and acting were pretty cheesy, but I liked The House on Haunted Hill. I think it was just the beginning that freaked me out, the old video footage of the psycho surgeries. Stuff that seems really vintage and genuinely scary gives me the creeps!

Acting in most horror movies is cheesy....that's part of their charm. The House on Haunted Hill was a good one...had that weird element to it.

Amityville Horror (Original with James Brolin) still gets me. The lighting on the house, the creepy music...eerie.

I love that scene!!! That scene gave me second thoughts about going camping that's for sure. I still get a bit creeped out when I'm in the woods cuz' of that scene!!

Have you ever seen the movie "Curtains"? It's an old one, and really lame, but had one of the best scenes...

You know, I quite enjoyed the new TCM movies, both the remake and the beginning. Visually I thought both were stunning. I found it more interesting, that the man who shot the original also shot the remake. So kinda neat to see what his vision was working with a large budget and modern technology.

All in all, some of the better remakes.

Luv2BScared
12-06-2007, 09:36 PM
I liked the fact that the same slow panning of the rooms were part of his remake. The slow, long look around the room, every detail captured. Just when you thought you had seen the worst the room had to offer, there was always more waiting for you.

The visuals in the remake of TCM were very well done. In the basement scenes, they were so realistic I could feel the dampness, smell the mold, and the coppery smell of blood...very well done.

Sorry I've been gone for so long....

Has anyone here seen Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon? I saw it at the Starz Cinema in the Tivoli and loved it. Its out on DVD now.

I am not a big fan of the slasher genre (I like the first two Halloween movies, the first Nightmare on Elm Street, and the first Friday the 13th, but I feel like the subsequent films were not very good).

This movie is a slasher movie that has some comedic elements to it, but it is not a comedy (think An American Werewolf in London opposed to Saturday the 14th or Transylvania 6500).

Welcome back!! Nice to see you!

I haven't heard of that movie...was it worth watching??? I saw two trailers for a couple of movies that looked pretty good. The first one is called "Hatchet", supposed to be an old school type slasher movie. Looks to be just that, I may still check it out.

The second one, I'm not so sure about...It's called "Broken" looks like it is not only very gory, but very disturbing as well. The storyline is that a woman comes home from a date, next thing she knows is that she's waking up buried underground in a wooden box. She makes her way out somehow, and is now being subjected to the very twisted ideas of a serial killer. He also has her daughter, and she has to communicate with this whack job to find out if her daughter is alright.
She at one point has the option of pulling a razor blade out of her stitched up stomach in an attempt to free herself...ewwwwwwww!!! This one is suppsed to be very twisted in the way the killer tortures and degrades his victims....looks decent for a b rated horror flick, but looks very graphic.
I watched the trailer, not sure I need nightmares on this level, but you never know!! http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

I agree with that. Remakes have that problem. They never have the same "charm" as you put it that the orginals did. Just like the original "Halloween". Is it cheesy, campy, and basically pretty lame? YEP! But we still like it. The new remake by Rob Zombie ROCKED in some aspects, really stunk in others..

It's like turning some really great books into movies...they can never quite live up to the book no matter what they do.

Speaking of books, I'm re-reading one of my old favs, "Night Shift" by Stephen King. Love the short stories...I never really cared for some of his full length novels as they seem to wander too much.

I also just watched "Ghost Story". Old, cheesy, campy flick, the book was so much better, but some of the little jolts in the movie make it worth suffering through once every 5 years or so. hahaha!! I love the Chowder Society in the movie, that would be a great group to be in!! We need to organize our own!!

I actually watched House on Haunted Hill again last night since we'd been talking about it. Still love it. The ending is retarded, but doesn't matter. The movie is worth it just for the first scenes, and then all the subsequent scenes in the basement. I want a haunted house that's designed exactly like the basement of that movie.

The Asylum already capitalizes on the imagery of this movie. Watching the opening titles, I couldn't believe how closely it mirrored The Asylum's promo graphics and website from the past two years. Imagine if they designed their haunt in some huge industrial basement instead of the temporary structure. Same theme, same actors, same quality of design, with a facility worthy of the haunt itself.

Luv2BScared
12-10-2007, 08:55 PM
That would be AWESOME!! If the Asylum were able to do that, and use that same model as HOHH for the scenes, no one would be able to come close to them! The set design in HOHH is about as authentic as it gets! I remember seeing that as a kid, and wishing my creepy basement looked half that scary!! To this day I wish my house looked like that year round!

Wow, seems like theres some discussion going here, nice! Haven't checked in a few so I'll try to comment on what I missed.

Here's my take on remakes, you've got to take them for what they are, remakes. Don't expect them to be better than the original. Definitely don't expect the charm. Try to look at other aspects, like the cinematography, set design, acting, etc. The new TCM movies I think are visually stunning. And like I said, because the original guy shot the remake, kinda cool to see what his updated idea of how it should look is.

Rob Zombies remake, I really enjoyed, don't know what his hang up is on hillbillyesque families is, but I like that he doesn't mind sticking with it. Liked that Michael was more intimidating, however, funny side note, in the scene where he's destroying that old abandoned house, he goes outside and the chain link gate gets the best of him. I thought that was pretty comical.

Here's someting interesting for you guys to check out, they were filming a movie at Rocky Point the last time I was there for the auction. Probably gonna be right up everyone's alley. Here's a link to the trailer:

I watched an interesting movie last night called "Captivity". Has anyone seen this one? If you haven't, it might be worth your time to check it out.
It is a story about an actress who is kidnapped then held captive in some whack jobs basement. It reminds me of the "Saw" flicks in a lot of aspects, but this guy has other motives. Some very twisted stuff happens in this one, and the close to the end twist was something I wasn't expecting. This movie was much better than I though it would be. I absolutely loved Behind the Mask - I also love Shaun of the Dead, but I think I liked BtM more than SotD. I haven't heard of the other ones you mentioned. I am getting kind of tired of endless "Hey, look how we can torture people" movies though. Its almost as if the filmmakers are trying to out do each other in gore, instead of concentrating on building any real tension. What happened to films trying to scare people? It's almost as if they'd rather just gross people out (which I, and probably most people, am now desensitized to). I like the original slasher movies because of the menace that Michael, Freddy, or Jason posed, not because of how they dispatched their victims. I didn't like the sequels near as much, and the third + films tended to be downright awful. I think the remakes are missing the point - they just want to do the bloody gore using modern technology instead of focusing on the characters. For the record, I loved the movie 1408 because it focused on building tension instead of gore. The first half or so was awesome and then it went downhill a bit, but it was a great attempt to actually bring fear back into horror movies.

As for Rocky Point Haunted House... Well, I heard about it last year because of a couple articles that said it was closing. Apparently, the Haunt industry consistently rated it as one of the top 5 Haunts in the entire nation. It is....sorry....it was located in Salt Lake City, so a couple friends and I decided to take a road trip out there and go see it. It was an absolutely awesome experience. I did a full review of it last year and put it up on these boards. I'll see if I can dig it out.

What made Rocky Point such a cool haunt was a combination of things. The best thing for me was checking out the sets. They were absolutely awesome. They set the mood and tone of the Haunt and were absolutely cool. They were built from the same materials as the sets at the local Haunts, but what separated them was the excellent scenic painting and dressing. The costumes and makeup were also excellent. They line to get in the Haunt was interesting. If there was a large crowd, they'd be outside and around the building, but once you paid to get in, you went through an indoor cemetery set before you entered the main Haunt. Think of Casa Bonita - you are in line and it sets the atmosphere before you get your food (a horror, in of itself), which is then carried out throughout the rest of the experience. Another great thing about Rocky Point was the length. It took a good 30-40 minutes for us to go through the Haunt. The space they were in could easily have taken two Haunts (which a lot of people seem to do now - twice the entrance fees and all that).

While Rocky Point was indeed awesome, it was not without its problems....the same problems we find here at the local Haunts. The most annoying thing about it was the issue of crowd control. The line in the cemetery was ghastly, and, while they tried to time the groups differently, part way into the Haunt turned into another huge line which last for the rest of the Haunt. In that sense, it reminded me a lot of when I went to the Asylum last year. One giant conga line. With chainsaws.

Chris

Skelterbet,

Behind the Mask better than Shaun, hmmm, in certain ways, but I love Shaun of the Dead

Rocky Point, totally agree with you. Rocky Point has been the only haunted house I've ever been in where I felt totally immersed in another world. Two spots in particular, coming around the corner in the forest/werewolf area and seeing the gypsy cart, probably not even one of the most elaborate sets, but man it got me. Also, the Pirates of the Scaribbean set of the swamp and shack, talk about set design. All in all, amazing, it will be missed.

When did you come to The Asylum, didn't see a review from you, maybe I missed it. Sorry to hear it was a conga line, what night was it you were there? However, after asking this question, I realize that you as a haunt aficianado should know to come on a slower night!

Joking aside, as a haunt goer, nothing sucks more than getting bunched up inside. Here's another perspective for you though, it sucks for the haunt owner as well. We spend so much time trying to make sure people have a great experience, then for the first two weeks of the month, mainly on weekdays, we stand around most the night doing a whole lot of nothing. Then Friday and Saturday come, and everyone wants to go to the haunted house! We know it's not as good of an experience, and speaking for myself, it sucks for me to know this! But no matter what we do, people still come on the weekend! We've spent years, and will spend more years, trying to figure out that million dollar question of how to get people out earlier in the month, or on weekdays.

Chris

Luv2BScared

Chris,

the only people who go to haunted houses on the weekdays are the true, twisted, haunt freaks like us. Everyone else waits for the weekend hoping that haunts are like bars..weekends are more lively. What they don't realize is that in doing that, they are running the risk of having a less than great experience because of lines, crowds, running into other groups, etc.
There are people who go to a couple of haunts a season, and then there are those of us who hit every haunt, every year. The regulars learn pretty quick that the best times to go is on the weeknights where you really do get the full show. Just my two cents.

Gotta disagree with you on I Am Legend, went Saturday night and really enjoyed it, great suspense, had me jumping a couple times. Chris,

I agree completely about Rocky Point - the total immersion effect is exactly what made it so cool. The forest and jungle sets in particular were excellent. One (small) gripe with Rocky Point is it lacked continuity throughout the whole haunt. Everything they did was done excellently, but it was jarring to go from a cemetery and haunted mansion to the Slasher Wax Museum, to the Silver Screen Monsters section, to the Pirates of the Scaribbean, and so on. What they did in each section was very cool, but I think I would have liked it better if it maintained one theme for the whole Haunt. That was the only time I went to Rocky Point, so I don't know if that is how they normally did their Haunt or if it was sort of a Big Finish that incorporated all the horror elements that they could. That small gripe aside, I still loved the experience and am glad that I went.

I went to the Asylum on a rainy Friday night in 2006. I know, I know-I should have gone on a better night (and I usually try to) and thus I got the expected crowd and the conga line. In 2005 we went to the Asylum on a Thursday and we didn't catch a conga line until we were about 2/3 of the way through. Sadly, I missed the Asylum this year. Generally, I go to Haunts with a group of my friends who are fellow Haunt lovers (though they are not quite as fanatic as I am about it). Last year Friday was the only night we could go.

The conga line issue is a tough one and I've experienced it in most every Haunt I've gone to. I'm sure Haunt owners don't like it and I imagine that it is one of the most common complaints that you hear. The worst conga line I experienced was 13th Door in 2005 - It was a conga line from the moment I stepped off the elevator. I've read about this problem in various articles and the best advice I've seen is the "Scare Forward" idea, and I noticed that the Asylum did exactly that. I think what cancels the "Scare Forward" idea is that some people get so scared they run until they hit the next group and see the monster attacking them, then they don't want to go into the room and it log-jams because the group behind them come running from the monster they just ran from. Actually, I think this might be a good discussion in its own topic.

Hellraiser,

I'm glad that someone else agrees with me about Horror Films-I am so tired of these endless gore/torture flicks. I long for a good old-fashioned Horror flick. I thought 1408 was great. It built the atmosphere and set the tone very well. About half way through it started to lose some of its momentum, but I applaud their effort and loved the movie. Did you see The Mist yet? In a way, The Mist is the scariest movie I've seen (and no, it is not the monsters in the mist that are scary-the people are way scarier). The ending has a lot of people mad, but I, for one, am impressed that the Director had enough guts to end it the way he did.
