Okay, last night I stayed up very late and watched Solstice. It's a new DVD release. Has anyone seen this yet? This was one of the creepier movies I have seen and it had a surprise ending that really sealed the deal for me! If you have not seen this and love getting creeped out go rent it!! The movie had some great special effects that were subtle yet effective.

Didn't see that one, Luv2 sounds like you see all of them, maybe you should blog your reviews on the HD blog page. That'd be cool.

Last night I watched Horror Business, it's a documentary about guerilla horror filmmaking. It was interesting, not great, but interesting. You can check it out at http://www.horrorbusinessmovie.com/

Contrary to what people may think, I realy have never been a horror film person, because I grew up in the 80's I guess I was a slasher film fan to a certain degree. As of late, and because of my involvement with the haunted house business, I have had the opportunity to meet or at least be in the same room with people that horror fans would be excited about, and unfortunately many times, I kinda knew who they were, but not what they did or why they were famous. Hate to admit this but, people like Tom Savini, George Romero ... I know, pretty bad huh.

So my goal has been to bone up on my horror film knowledge, watch the Romero zombie movies, as well as the Sam Raimi movies, things like that. While I've been doing this, it seems to have sparked my interest in the modern movies as well. I guess because I haven't had to many preconceived opinions, it's allowed me to really enjoy some of the new movies, even the remakes.

Definitely want to catch Sweeney Todd though, A funny story, my Dad called me from New York and says, "Nancy (my stepmother) and I went to the theater and saw Sweeney Todd" I asked if he liked it. The answer was, "It was a musical" pause "You would have liked it because it was pretty gory, probably would give you some ideas, but it was a musical" No matter how hard he tried my Dad couldn't get past the fact that it was a musical, and no self respecting man is going to admit that they liked a musical!

"Solstice" is a Blockbuster exclusive release, and yes I do watch a lot of horror movies. I like to watch the ones that you don't hear about on tv. The indie films have some of the best cinematography I've seen. I'll have to see if I have an invite to blog on HD, I don't think I ever got it.
I like Sam Raimi's diversity as a director/producer, and his ability to bring his vision truly to life in his films. He has a keen eye for detail, and really does a good job of bringing his audience into his films.
George Romero again, a very diverse film maker, and his brilliance really shines through in "The Dark Half", and "Monkey Shines". I like the fact that both men stay away from the "canned soup" variety of film production. "Martin" was in my opinion one of his best efforts. An oldie but a goodie!

I will get out to see "Sweeney Todd" once I get all my moving done. I will admit that the fact that it is a musical has kept me busy being "too busy" to go see it. I will get around to it eventully though as it looks like one that must be seen.

Ok, so two horror movies in 3 days, a record for me. But last night I watched "Fido", a horror/zombie/comedy. It was pretty good, some funny parts, creative, worth checking out. One thing I was impressed with was the cinematography, the color in this movie was really vibrant. However on the down side, there were a couple digital visual effects where I was like, "did you even try to pull that off?" Anyone else see it? You can check out the website at:

I did see this one and loved it! Very campy film in my opinion, funny, witty and well done. I do agree with you on the effects, scenes riding in cars were so bad it looked like my 9 year old had done them.
Overlooking that, this was a great film definitely worth seeing. It reminds me of "Shawn of the Dead", another film that I realy enjoyed.

Chris? You got to meet George Romero?

THAT'S AWESOME!

I've heard that he is very personable and friendly. I'd love to meet him. I'd be curious to hear more about that. I've heard less positive things about Tom Savini....

Speaking of Horror Movies, I just saw The Orphanage.

If you like the good, old-fashioned, tension-driven horror flicks, then you will LOVE this movie.

It doesn't sink to the level of many modern horror films - there are not any gore or torture scenes, nor does it rely on the "startle" effect to produce its scares (though it has a couple well-timed startle effects). No - this movie is the real deal; it makes you sit on the edge of your seat and worry about what is going to happen next and remind your self that it is just a movie.

That might be a little overstated, but not by much. This film is awesome - a paragon of what the horror genre should be. I hope that other filmmakers watch it and take notes.

I'd love to hear other comments about it. It was produced by Guillermo del Toro (who gave us the excellent Pan's Labyrinth last year). It is in Spanish with English subtitles.

I want to go and see this movie. Looks like it is well worth the price of admission! Glad to hear a review!

Have you seen "No country for old men"? VERY good movie, and very scary. Not in a typical horror movie sense, but scary indeed! The ending left some people baffled...watch closely, listen closer and you will get it.
Anyone else seen this movie?

I enjoyed No Country for Old Men a lot. I didn't find it very scary, but I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I might have been one of the ones who were baffled at the end though. I understand all that happened, I just didn't care for how it went down. I'd be more specific but I don't want to spoil it for people who haven't seen it. It is definitely worth seeing.

Skelterbet,

Yes, I did, at a now defunct haunt/horror show in LA. It was almost a surreal experience, we were at the show and I noticed there was a Q&A with George Romero. As I've admitted on here, I'm not a big horror movie buff (working on it), but I decided to go check it out.

It ended up being a room of about 12 people and George Romero, where he just sat about 5 feet in front of us, and answered any question you could think to throw at him. He was very nice and engaging, very down to earth and unassuming. When I got back from the trip I mentioned this to a friend of mine in England, who let me know that the last convention he was at in England, the line was around the block to get an autograph. He couldn't believe we just got to sit there and chat with him for an hour.

He spoke a bit about Diary of the Dead, which I'm excited to see, looks like it will have a limited release in February. Kinda looks to me like Blair Witch meets Night of the Living Dead.

I think the new Rambo movie could be very frightening!! A 62 year old Sly on steroids to keep him looking young? Scary! And have you seen recent pics of Sly's mom? She should be the main scare at haunts...hanut owners would have to keep paramedcis on site for everyone passing out from fright!

HAHAHA This IS a board about all things scary, and she sure does fit the bill!!!

If you want a good laugh and an opportunity to see some of the worst acting, with the worst writing around, check out "Drive In". Looks like a lot of it is based on the ICP theme...it's so bad it's almost worth watching just for the heckling opportunities!!! Doesn't even qualify for a basement horror movie. The 2 wanna be gangstas in the beginning make my cat look tough...and to think they were the "best" of the actors that tried out for this...unreal!

Saw Diary of the Dead, this weekend, been sick, was my only venture out of bed or off the couch, but wanted to see it before it was out of theaters. It's only playing at one theater in town, the Starz center. I really enjoyed it, it was creative, interesting to see how a "big" movie director/legend approaches a low budget zombie flick, kinda a return to his roots but with some modern influences. I would recommend it for sure.

My son is 4, and because he's my son, is in to anyting "spooky" as he says. It was pretty action packed, there were only a few spots that seemed to loose his attention. He seemed to enjoy it.

Ok so here's is the story I read in Rolling stone as best as I can tell it. Okay so the story begins with the guitarist of the Mars Volta, named Omar Rodriguez Lopez, on vacation in Isreal. he saw a roadside stand selling a Oujia board all in Islamic with weird writings and scriptures on it. He bought it for a birthday present for the lead singer, Bixler-Salva. They planned to use it to summon the spirit of their old friend and ex-guitarist James Ward, Who died of a heroin overdose in 2003. But, insteadof raising the spirit of their friend, they summoned an evil spirit named goliath. The demon threatened to kill them. Over the course of their recording of the album, "The Bedlam In Goliath", various things began happening to them. Their Home studio flooded, digital tracks began dissapering and thier manager quit and sued them, saying that the band was destroying the world. In fact the say that the lyrics for the song, "Conjugal Burns" are completly written by Goliath and the weird scriptured writings on the board. After the completion of the album, Omar Rodriguez Lopez boarded a plane with nothing but the board. He flew to an undisclosed location. He took a taxi far away from any people and buried it. He then got back on a plane and flew home; stating that he hoped never to return there. I love the album and HIGHLY reccomend it.

Made the mistake of starting to watch The Mist last night...good grief what a waste of film!!! As soon as I got my first glimpse of the "monster" in the mist I knew it was all downhill from there...some of the worst use of CG I have ever seen.
I never can figure out why Stephen King's books can be so well done and chill you to the bone, then the movie is just a complete bomb..never even touches the level that you achieve reading his stuff. I may never watch another of his movies again...I'll stick with the books.

Tye, I think that I wouldn't limit that statement to horror movies. We now have CGI buildings exploding (like the scene near the beginning of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and cheesy things like CGI armies clashing together like a wave against rock (complete with soldiers flying around like spray, a la Troy). CGI has invaded all genres and it is bad. Okay...maybe it hasn't hit Romantic Comedies....YET.

I think CGI (which is almost always badly done CGI) should be avoided where models or animatronic effects could be used. Consider the Underworld films. I should say, consider the werewolves in the Underworld films.

In the first film they were awesome-they looked great and they looked real. Well, mostly (I'm forgiving the scene of them running on the walls and ceiling); the point being the looks, not so much the actions. They used CGI once in the film and that was to show a man going from human to werewolf form; the rest of the film they were costumes with animatronic faces. On the DVD the directors and producers explained that they decidedly chose not to use CGI because it looks bad.

In the second film, they forgot about their thoughts on CGI and the CGI werewolves were bloody awful - they moved wrong, they looked fake, etc. Of course, the "bad guy" vampire was also a CGI generated mess that was very stupid, not to mention that the writing of the second film was awful. There was nothing redeeming about the second film.

Starting to watch? Does that mean you did not see the whole thing?

I loved The Mist, in spite of the cheesy CGI monsters. I tell people that The Mist is the scariest movie I've ever seen, and I'm not lying; but the horror, at least for me, has nothing to do with the monsters in the mist. The monsters in the mist are nothing but a plot device to force a large group of people to take shelter in a grocery store. The strength of the movie, in my opinion, is the way the various people and groups of people handle the situation. I don't know how closely the film follows the story, since I have not read it (yet), but the way the people acted is very true-to-life. I've worked in Emergency Services for my whole adult life; people who are not used to emergency situations behave differently than they normally would-and I think the film captures that brilliantly (and accurately). When those people start freaking out and going with the religious nut-case because she is providing answers, I started cringing. As that situation grew and the believers started going after the non-believers, I had a hard time sitting still and staying quiet. On top of that, I was surprised the Director had enough guts to do the ending the way he did.

I haven't had a movie touch a nerve like that in a long time. The backbone of the movie is that the monsters in the mist are just animals doing what they do - the real monsters are people.

I'm sorry that you didn't like it.

I agree Skelter. I saw it at the theater when it came out. I liked the movie. To me the monsters were secondary. It was the people and the "Murphy's law" part of life. For the one lady at the beginning that had to leave because of her kids to only be one of the survivors at the end. The ending was another Murphy's laws type of effect. If you would only not be rash and wait one more minute type of thing. I was happy when they took care of the nut case, many people ion the theater cheered also when it happened. I got absorbed into the grocery store and the people and the look of the mist outside. It was more real to me, I guess.

I haven't seen The Mist yet, might go rent it this weekend. I did recently watch two OLD classics ...with NO CGI! Picked up The Ledgend of Hell House and Circus of Souls (Black and White!!! omg!)... very interesting to watch old school horror after getting jaded by all of today's technology.
It was a trip. Found myself marveling at the simplicity or purity if you will. Terror wrought by suspense and the mystery of the unknown. Without over the top effects. Sometimes maybe our imaginations frighten us more than anything else could.

I was just disappointed in the whole thing....it could have been done much better. I just couldn't buy it. The acting and the dialogue were less than believable. Better writing could have saved this film. Some day, maybe they will actually produce a truly great horror movie that doesn't insult our intelligence. I've been reading a script for a friend of mine and it is some of the lamest stuff I've ever read....sad thing is, this film will be going into production soon....sigh.

That's exactly it!! We need to be given the abilty to use our own imaginations....we're not. Filmakers have bombarded us with gore, special effects (that aren't that special) and give us every head on a silver platter....where's the mystery? Where's the suspense?

Alright - I'm game. A couple questions:
1) Are there limitations? I'm not familiar with what you're in a position to do, so I don't know if you are talking about taking a project from the Script Phase all the way to Post-Production. If so, is the company you're with able to handle big projects? Or are we looking at a small set shoot? Also, what sort of release are you envisioning?

2) Are we looking at something where we are making the movie (i.e. we produce, cast, direct, build, etc.), or are we looking at something that a production team will take over the production once we have a solid script? I'm interested in both, to be honest, though I'd like more information before jumping in with both feet.

I have a couple of story ideas that I've been holding to write out on my own (short-story format). They're on the back burner right now, but I'd be willing to bring them out if the project looks right.

It's amazing how much time flies when you are busy. I had no idea its been so long since I've checked the boards...

Anyway, here are the movies I've seen so far this summer (no horror films, unless you count IJatKotCS...but I digress).

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - I hated it. Call me a hater, fine. I didn't hate it like I hated the last 3 Star Wars films (the prequels). But almost. Thankyou Mr. Lucas for attempting trash another one of my childhood memories (yes, George Lucas was the one that pushed the story elements that caused me to hate it).

WALL-E - Cute. Not the best Pixar, but cute. The portrayal of humans in the future was very amusing, in an uncomfortable sort of way (because they are probably right).

Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D - The 3D effect is absolutely awesome. The movie itself? Its okay, I guess. There were a lot of 3D gags (you know, have something jump right into the viewer's face to make them jump), but that was expected. The movie was pretty fun.

Kung-Fu Panda - Rocks! I loved it. It was predictable and all, but it was cool.

Get Smart - In my opinion, it is the best movie so far this year. Emphasis on "so far" because the previews for The Dark Knight look awesome.

Luv2BScared
08-01-2008, 09:17 AM
Of your list I have only seen Kung Fu Panda...it was cute. I haven't been going to movies lately, too busy doing other things.
I did see "The Tracey Fragments" with Ellen Page. She is currently one of my favorite actresses and she does a great job in this indie film. And, speaking of her, if you want to be scared, especially you guys, watch "Hard Candy". Very good indie film!
Both movies have some content that would not be appropriate for minors.

I'm anti-social with netflix but I haven't even watched movies from there in a while. However, yeah, Hard Candy made me squirm. Not in the classic horror sense but that scene (you know it) made my jaw drop and my hand cover my mouth. It was like watching a root canal.

I loved it! I loved how the line of predator and prey blurred and had you asking who was who.
