View Full Version : Things That Go Bump In The Night

My 23 year old son is living in the house that my oldest brother passed away in. He is in fact sleeping in the bed that my brother died in. He came to me 2 days ago and said that he has been experiencing some strange things in that house, especially in the room my brother died in. He was working on some music he's writing and the curtains just opened. Slid open like someone had done it. He also reports sudden very cold spots in the room with no windows open. He said that he "feels" like he's being watched late at night. He has a small recording studio and some good equipment so he's going to set up at night to see if he can catch any EVP's. He feels strongly that he may.
My brother George was the ornery type, so it very well could be him creeping around!! I will let you all know what if anything he records. I'm excited just thinking about it. I hope he gets something, that would be awesome!!!

Anyone ever had any EVP experiences??? Ghostly appearances? I've personally had a few things happen that I could never explain and I love to hear what others have experienced!!

I've sat here and written and then rewritten things over and over.

::sigh::

I think I should just say this: when it comes to all things supernatural I am a total and complete skeptic. I love the idea of a supernatural and I love all of the fiction that it generates, but I can't bring myself to believe in it.

Being a total skeptic, these kinds of discussions come up a lot and I normally jump right into them with gusto. They almost always turn out bad.

I like you folks a lot, so I think that I'm going to try and stay out of this one.

Why stay out of them? Part of the fun of the forums is the differing opinions everyone has. We can have a spirited debate without being ugly can't we? I have encountered things that I cannot explain...does that make those experiences ghosts? Paranormal activity? Nope, but it still leaves the question, "What was it?"
I think your input on the topic would be a great addition. Your views could bring enlightenment to an always interesting topic!!
Everyone has pictures of "Orbs" and they believe that they are proof of paranornal activity. I personally think they are actually dust in the air.
I had a few experiences in Phillipsburg up by Tiny Town that I cannot to this day explain. Is it ghosts or just some weird atmospheric reaction? I don't know. I like to discuss it just because trying to unravel the mystery is entertaining.
In the case of my son's experience: Is it my brother just hanging out because he died there, or is there something that allows the curtains to open on their own? I don't know, but it's interesting to figure it out.
In the case of EVP's, I have heard what are reported to be "real" recordings. I think that I could reasonably record my house overnight and hear what I choose to hear. If I wanted to hear a voice whispering "Get out" for instance, I'm sure I could find a spot that sounds similar on the tape...but, what of there was an undeniable voice? Well, whose is it, and where did it come from? I am by nature VERY curious about everything around me, and this is one of those topics that appeal to me.

On a funny side note, I moved recently into a 100 year old victorian house that has lot's of cool noises...my favorite one is the downstairs toilet....it makes a hissing/whining noise because the float sticks sometimes. While it is trying to rise and it is sticking the whining sounds very, very close to "help me". hehehhe
It's the toilet's way of asking me to repair it I guess. One of the kids was freaked out because they heard this "Help me" whispering in the night.....hahahaha. I haven't fixed it yet, let em' be creeped out!!!

any luck on that sound bite?
most of the time i just get wierd 'feelings'... i am a very sensory person...maybe i feel disturbances in the energy fields around me or something...i think those intuitions are a part of all humans senses...some are just more atuned...like a perfumer will have a superduper sense of smell...
anyway...i have taken off running for no damn reason other than a sudden creepy icicles up my back feeling...there have been 2 times i actually saw something i couldn't explain...

once was at age 5....the people across the alley had an atic and i saw something in the window...it looked like glowing coal embers were eyes in a huge shadowy lumpy form... scared the piss out of me...i had played in that atic too and got a smothering feeling like i couldnt breath or was being repelled...i never went back there to play after seeing that thing...

In Syracuse, NY; behind the Carrier Dome, is an ancient part of a gInormous cemetary named Oakwood...dates on the stones back as far as 18hundred something....toppled obelisks and overgrown ivy...shadowy hollows and ominous mosoleums...All us punker kids partied, hung out, and sometimes slept there.
I always heard rumors of the Caretaker and Shapeshifter....knew there was something to it cause a 'real' ghost story always makes my eyes water and my hairs stand up....
One night while sitting around the Pyramid (a mosoleum that was actually a pyramid complete with huge stone spheres in a circle around it) I saw the Caretaker...he is an elder man..looked like he was a slave maybe... in a stovepipe hat, coat tails and lace cravat...carrying a lantern...very clear and detailed looking but transparent....never made any noise...never looked at anyone...just walked from the south-facing side of the Pyramid, down the hill, and across the dirt track fading away as he went....tres bizzare!!!

Oh yeah, there were like 5 or 6 of us and we all just kinda looked at eachother like "Did you just see......? Um......Yeah...did you....? " And then we all enjoyed being freaked out and discussed other encounters and stories.
The Shapeshifter is harder to believe...I heard something once but can't say it wasnt animals in heat or mating or something....It freaked me the hell out..for sure...sounded supernatural..but then again...have you ever heard a Mountain Lion scream? That is unearthly too.

I like to go to the cemetery behind Central City. There are graves from the 1800's to just recently. I love to read the headstones and ponder what the people buried there must have been like. History, love it!
There is a tale about a ghostly woman who visits twice a year:

Masonic Cemetery – Every April 5 and November 1, it is said that a beautiful woman in a black satin dress appears and lays flowers on the grave of John Edward Cameron. There are many different rumors for the connection between this ghost and Cameron, who died on November 1, 1887. At one time, twelve people gathered at Cameron's grave on November 1 to see the ghost. They were not disappointed -- at sunset, the woman appeared as always, but when two of the men tried to grab her, she flew off and vanished on a hill not far from the cemetery. The hilltop cemetery is north of the city.
April 5th is coming...who wants to go find out?

While I was up in Central City camping I had the opportunity to take a tour of the historic Masonic Hall which is still in operation. They were getting ready to hold a meeting and swear in new members...we got what we were told "a VERY rare glimpse into the meeting chambers". It was very eclectic, historical and creepy all at once....VERY weird guys and drenched in secrecy. Very few of our questions were answered, and they have these royalty-like robes that they wear during "rituals". Weird...made me wanna get out of there.

I have a funny (that might not be the right word) story about the Central City cemetery.

When I was a senior in h.s. back in the stone ages (ha ha) I went with my family to that cemetery and we had a picnic just outside of the fence. After we ate, we decided to go look at the stones. I was getting sad because so many of them died so young, and some were only days old.

So, I'm reading this one person's stone (don't know the name) and I felt sad and ill all at the same time. I felt like I was gonna puke. With that, this big black blob of god-knows-what came up from my throat and I yakked it up at the foot of the tombstone. Weirdest s**t I ever encountered. "I puke on your grave."

I felt very bad about that happening and my family was quite taken aback, to say the least! To this day I have no idea what it was, but I like to think it was a big blob of evil that I expelled from me that day! Hah! It was gross and frightening...srsly! Oh, I hope no one was eating lunch just now! http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif

Mistressghia,

You're from Syracuse? I'm from Rochester originally, my dad and grandparents still live there. When did you move here?

On topic, last year I was interviewed on Channel 4 or 7, can't remember, about paranormal activity. They wanted a view point from someone who "set up" scares, to see if they really believed in the paranormal. In the interview I basically said, until I experience it first hand, I'll remain a skeptic. Gee, that sounds like a challenge maybe I don't want to make!

So nothing picked up on the EVP's from my son...he hasn't even been there much so that creates a problem.

April 5th?? I'm planning on making the trip up to Central City to go creep around and see if the mystery woman shows up in the Masonic Cemetery...I think mistressghia is planning on going with me as well. If it has snowed even a little you'll probably need 4X4 to get up there as the roads are dirt and don't get plowed...
There are some amazing places up there..lot's to see and do. Historic ghost mining towns, the victorian house tour (awesome), The face on the bar room floor, etc..
Who wants to go with us? We could make a fun day out of it! There's some very spooky history to be seen up there and we could either take a cooler, or buy lunch up there. We could pick a spot to meet up at.

Keep me in the loop, since we've had the kids, we make plans as far in advance as oh say, an hour from now. What date are you looking at? Is there trespassing involved or is it all legit?

We are going April 5th, that's a Saturday. We'll meet at the old Masonic Cemetery behind Central City. There is no trespassing involved, the cemetery is open during the day, and they do try to close it after dark. There is large area where we can all park off the dirt road up there right next to the cemetery, so no worries there.
I plan on going up around noon. That way I have time to read old headstones, go up to Nevadaville, (old deserted mining town) and maybe squeeze in a visit to the old victorian house before I go reading headstones in the cemetery.

So, noon for me!!

Around noon sounds good for me. That way we can have some fun, shop ( which is always fun) and also look around and read some tombstones. I want to make sure I am at the right spot at sundown.

Well, I would like to go but noon is not possible for me. I should be done with all my tests and stuff by mid-afternoon and can head up then. I'm assuming that you guys are going to still be there. Do we have an address for the cemetery that I can Mapquest?

Sun Down is when it is supposed to happen. So I am guessing around 7pm-7:30ish or so. I am thinking we will be done around 8pm at the latest.

Here are the directions I have-
Hwy 119 to Hwy 279 through Central City. At Main Street take a left. End of Main Street take dirt road to far right and go .4 miles. There will be a sign that says Memorial and your there.

I might not be there at noon but not to soon afterwards. From what I am reading on it, a few people might show up to see that know about the girl. I know Ghost Hunters were there one time. This promises to be fun either way. It would probably freak me out if she appears.

Ok I went. Here is my evening.....

I went around 3:30 to where I thought we had to be. There were few people there all looking for the same thing. We walked through knee height snow to no avail. As it started to get dark we all started to freak because we knew we were in the wrong place. Why can't there be like a 7-11 in Central City so a girl can ask for better directions. Finally a girl showed up and said she knew where it was and came by to pick up some of her lost friends, so we all piled in all of our cars like storm chasers to go to where we needed to be. There were maybe 20 to 30 people there all waiting by the time we got there. I meet a lady who was talking like she had a connection with the spirits, how when they are around she would feel sick, and as time went on she became so sick that night she had to go to her car. So I FOR SURE wanted to sit next to her. While we were waiting, her nice friend had a still camera and was showing me the orbs that would magically appear sometimes on some of the pictures and we knew it was getting close and I was getting more and more excited. I knew I made a good choice sitting next to them. In between her feeling more and more sick it was getting darker so we all waited quietly for the most part. And waited. And waited. The rumor was at sundown she would appear, but no one was ready to leave just yet. The people next to me began talking about how they will do a grid afterwards and begin the investigation and I was like woohoo this is like being in a queue line waiting for the house to open. I don't care how old you get, when this excitement builds, I feel like a teenager again. Camera flashes every now and then to add to the fun. But then people started to leave, and by 8:30 still nothing. As time passed and the talk of investigations slowed down, I looked over to only find the girl had a disposable camera and her nice friend was out of batteries on his still camera and remembered that in all the ghost hunter shows, flashes are not used on camera as an investigation was underway, I realized that I was had. My guess is that 1 of 2 things just happened. 1) Someone started this rumor to see how many dumb people we could get to show up on the same day and time, or 2) it was like a telephone game. The only story I read was how 12 guys went and saw her and when then tried to grab her she ran and disappeared. Maybe she wasn't a ghost then, but by the time the telephone game started to play in the late 1800s to now it turned into where she was. No telling. But we left with only a couple people behind to head back down the mountain. I am glad I went. I would have wondered if I hadn't. But in November, you won't see me there. I would never want to hear people laughing at me, because they were able to get me not just once but twice.

Don't feel like you've been had Welch...Urban Legends are just that, but the possibility that something could happen is what makes it fun and exciting!
If you feel like you've been had by a rumor game, don't. Part of the fun is the mystery and unknown.
I was sorry I couldn't go...I had an urgent issue come up that needed to be tended to, otherwise I would have been there with bells on!!
