[b]So, it looks like Murray's Massacre is going for a face lift this year. Their website says it will be "Carnival of Chaos" this year. Just wondering, what makes a carnival good and scary?

Clowns that arent good clowns always freak my butt out. Scream Park had a clown section and during the HauntCon convention haunted house tours and we got the most response about that section. Serail Killers hide in vacant Carnivals. Maybe the snakes that were in the section that were disfigured got loose. Its what ever was calm now is messed up and turned into chaos. All kids love carnivals, but when it goes bad its very bad. Does this make sense or am I rambling into a wrong direction?

Well, you HAVE to have the funhouse that's maybe a little too real. Any of course, the haunted merry-go-round.
I've always thought this would be a good premise for a haunt. It's one that you can make super creepy-scary (and hopefully Murray's will...I'm excited), but you could also tone it down and do a kids' haunt from it. Something I've wanted to do for a long time!

I'm really excited to see Carnival of Chaos Return. It was open 2 years ago in Loveland, CO and was my favorite that year. I'm glad to see that they are back at it.
Theme is very important to me, and I love to see a common theme throughout a haunt. Murray's did an incredible job last year with the hillbilly/slaughterhouse theme, and so I almost hate to see them change it up.
That said, if they play out the Carnival of Chaos theme throughout the haunt, I can see this working really well, too. I never got a chance to see it up in Loveland, but I think Tony is a very capable haunted house designer, and I'll bet he does a great job with this one.
As for the whole clown thing ... I don't know, maybe I just don't get it. Clowns don't scare me, and half the time I wonder if they really scare people or if it's just cool to say that clowns scare you. "It" is one of my favorite Stephen King books, but even though Pennywise was a great spooky character, he's not the sort to give me nightmares.
But I don't mind the clowns so long as they fit in somehow. CarnEvil, though not my favorite haunt last year, did a good job of keeping the creepy carnival theme throughout the haunt. Some of the other haunts like Field of Corpses or The Asylum include them only in part, and I think it has to do with the fact that so many people have come to see them as a standard element, like the chainsaw, and would be disappointed if they didn't see the scary clown somewhere.
I'm more optimistic about them in a Carnival of Chaos-type setting.

At the last Carnival of Chaos, most actors weren't even clowns. They were more creepy carnies that you almost think you'd see at a rundown carnival. It was realistic and very creepy and I think it was a lot better than just having a lot of clowns.

Sorry, guys-My coffee hadn't kicked in yet. I was just going to add that I was never really afraid of clowns until I saw a photo of John W. Gacy (the serial killer who tortured and killed over thirty young men and boys) as "Pogo the Clown". I've never felt the same way about clowns since then.

Yeah. That's an awfully creepy picture. Clowns have never really scared me, but that picture is really creepy knowing it's related to the events that happened.

Cool responses everyone! Thanks for all of the thoughts. Something that's been going through my head is the carnival music playing slightly tweaked out of time. That and the tent full of freaks... the kind you only get at the little town travaling carnivals.

I agree with Rob clowns and such don't scare me, if I wanted a to be scared in a Carnival atmosphere I'd just go to Lakeside.

Heh! Something about drunken (or crack-happy) and surly ride controllers makes me nervous, too. That, and rides that look like they've seen much better days-say, like thirty years ago. *shudder!*

30 Years ago? Try more like...50 lol I used to love that place, now its just a creepy, old amusmet park with rides that like to you beat you up....and gang members all around...not my kind of place...
But clowns...I dunno, something about their big smile and fake face...its just creepy and they are not funny at all...
*shrugs* I dunno...

Might be the only amusement park in town if the developer that buys Six Flags decides to redevelop instead.

I say "Good riddance!" Last time I went we paid full admission and an exorbitant parking fee. After waiting for over an hour we rode one roller coaster-and THEN they shut everything down due to rain and lightning. Now, of course, I realize that they can't control the elements, but they could've at least issued the equivalent of a rain check. What a rip-off! Besides, standing neck to neck with what seemed liked millions of overweight smelly people (lovin' that there FUNNEL CAKE!) is not exactly my idea of "amusement". I say bulldoze the whole thing and plant a beautiful Redwood forest. Ha! As if that's gonna happen in this country- where the only true God is MONEY.
The only other time I was there was on a day when it was government employees only, so the population was considerably smaller/ much more tolerable. It only took about fifteen minutes to get on each ride...woohooooo!

Agreed, plus after visiting Cedar Point and Paramount King's Island last summer, the rides here aren't even anywhere near as good as they should be.

For my fun, I always prefered Water World.More so on a hot day. At my age my ass isnt supposed to go over my head at slow or fast speeds. Things might fall out.

I agree, Six Flags isn't too bad after August. Plus, they have one free haunted house, and I believe the other only costs $5 or somethin' close to that.....

I have always enjoyed their haunted houses. The cost itself isnt much and they have the lines not to crazy to get in. Its the cost to get into the park on top of it thats a pain. I am always looking for guest passes to ease that pain. I even enjoyed the game where your walking around the park trying not to get found by the ones that are looking for the ones who are playing. lol did that make sense? When I start to go haunted house hopping I would rather just pay to get into the house and move onto the next one. Not stay and ride the rides. But at my age...its for the best.
