I've gotten way out of the haunted/horror/spooky loop, but I'm armed with a Netflix subscription and I want to fill up my queue with movies that will plug me back in.

Give me, if you'd be so kind, your top 10 list of essential scary movies. I'll leave it to you to determine your own criteria for what qualifies as "scary" but I only want your top 10. Thanks in advance.

This will be fun to see everyone's answer. You will be able to see the age difference in the answers. The older you get, you like more of the originals movies, back when it wasn't so much the gore but the unknown. Mine may be cheesy, but certain scenes in it may have effected me more through out the years so it sticks in my mind as favorites. But here are mine.

1-Halloween- Original
2-The Shining
3-Friday the 13th
4-The Exorcist
5-SAW 1
6- Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1 and 2 (Crazy I know but along with the first one being good I think it was 2 also that freaked me out. It was the one where they go into the radio station. That part of being trapped freaked me out for years. I couldn't watch all of it till I was older and saw the rest and then knew how the rest wasn't the same and good as in the first one.)
7-Seven
8-Amityville Horror- Original
9-Psycho
10- Hostel ( still can't watch all of it, bothers the hell out of me. But what I have seen makes it one of my favorites.)

oooo....kay, nobody laugh! these arent in order ...

It's Alive (that one about the mutant feral newborn that gets away and hides in the sewer?)
Amittyville-Original
Night of the Living Dead
Aliens (HEY! it IS scary!)
Troll (scared the PISS out of me when I was 15!)
Jeepers Creepers
The Hills Have Eyes (Inbreeders are scary!)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre- (again...Inbreeders)
IT
Children Of the Corn (damn ginger kids!)

So some of these are pretty 'vintage' if you will...some maybe even laughable now...but in the day...they scared the crap out of me!

I agree, no laughing at you, but with you, I watch the older ones and roll my eyes thinking ohh geezs.!But back then it was different. See we are telling our ages. Its the newer stuff that scares the crap off me now. The visual effects are much better and even in color!!!! Just Kidding. http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif

NO doubt!!!! The color REALLY blows my mind! LMAO!!! Some newer ones that get me going but didnt make my ten faves are Saw 1 and 3, The Ring, The Grudge(mostly for that creepy sound and the way the lady looked), of course the Hellraiser series, 13 Ghosts...
I chose the ones that deeply, fundamentaly disturbed me for my 10. I had a boyfriend that could drive me to tears mimicking the Troll from that old flick...I thought the other half of the attic that my room was in at the time was infested with the little goblins and stuff...I couldnt open a closet for YEARS after seeing It's Alive (saw that when I was like 7)...
ya know...There's a point here to be posted in the thread about what you'd like to see...I'll go there and post it! Wheeee!

30 days of night had killer effects but overall was lame. I did love the way the color looked somewhat bland throughout but the blood scenes were very graphic...the color popped on those scenes.

I lived in Thailand for couple of years and there was this TV series that was about this little old lady who ate people. She was like in her 90's and the camera whenever she would see her next victim would move closer for a close up towards her mouth as she licked it fast. Now keep in mind she had no teeth, but god, I remember seeing that mouth move and that flipped my crap out. If I could remember the name of it, I would have put it at #1.

Shade,

In addition to some of the fine films already mentioned, here are some to consider that are not your typical horror-fare (i.e., don't expect a lot of blood, guts, and gore), but instead are (or aspire to be) good, old-fashioned, tension-building films that make you not want to see what happens next while making you sit and watch the whole thing because it is so darn good. That said, I know a few people that miss the point and complain about the lack of gore and body counts.

1. The Body Snatcher (1945) - Starring Boris Karloff. No, this is not about pod people. Excellent Film.
2. The Changeling (1980) - Starring George C. Scott.
3. Ghost Story (1981) - All-star cast in a story by Peter Straub.
4. The Mist (2007) - The scariest movie I've ever seen (not the monsters-the people are terrifying).
5. El Orfanato [English title:] The Orphanage (2007) - EXCELLENT film! This is how modern horror should be done. It is in Spanish with subtitles.

Of course, if you are looking for horror movies that aren't necessarily that terrifying but are pretty good just the same, consider some of these.

The George Romero Zombie Films (Night of the Living Dead being already mentioned).
6. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
7. Day of the Dead (1985)
8. Land of the Dead (2005)

And the fun spin off:
9. Return of the Living Dead (1985) - Do you wanna party? Hell yeah! Zombie Fest!

And my favorite recent Horror movie that is fun, funny, and chilling at the same time:
10. Behind the Mask - The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) - Brilliant film that honors the Slasher movies of yesterday.

I could list some more, such as some of the classics or other good fare, but you asked for 10.

I loved Ghost Story! The book, as is par for the course, was much better though.

Hey Rob, here's what my list is if you're interested (in no particular order). Not really what I call "horror" more of an overall entertainment or a Halloween movie set.

1. Halloween (remake, didn't much care for the original...)
2. Evil Dead I
3. Evil Dead II
4. 28 Days Later
5. Shaun of the Dead
6. The Hills Have Eyes (either, I liked the remake better too)
7. Dawn of the Dead (you guessed it, remake)
8. Night of the Living Dead
9. The Devil's Rejects
10. Army of Darkness

here's a list of things I think you should avoid too:

1. Ginger Snaps

That's it. Hated it, absolutely hated it.

One I really like and always have is Nosferatu. I love the "Dracula" character in this 1922 film. It's cheesy and campy, yes, but classic just the same.
