Haunted Denver can confirm the opening of at least 1 new haunt this year, and that 1 will be closing its doors. Anyone heard any other news?

Oops, actually at least 2 closing, and at least 1 opening, sorry. We'll wait till closer to the season to reveal, but you're free to guess.

I am not guessing. I might be wrong and jinx them. I would rather know for sure. I know of one that has talked about it in the past, but keeps changing their mind. So I just hope they change it again and never close. It is one thing to lose a new place open for one year that didn't work out, but its sad if we lose older ones. Chris you would know more anyway, I will just wait till you announce it.

Ok, here's some of the low down.

Closings - The Chilling Hour, Murray's Massacre and potentially one more

Openings - Looks like as many as 4 may be opening this year

Anyone know of any others?

WelchWitch

TOO CUTE!! HD is like the parent who just rolled their eyes at knowing a secret and in order to hush up the kids had to tell the answer to their nagging question and ruin the surprise. God that was a flash back to my youth. My poor parents, Christmas time and other times where gifts were the subject of my attention were hell on them. LOL.

On to more important things to discuss.... That major sucks on Murrays!!! I wonder what the heck happened there. I was not expecting that one at all. I wanted to go play with Jason and the boys this season. Ok I am homeless now for sure. I could go back to ScreamPark or maybe Elitchs and have fun some more hmmmm what do I do now! I never made it to Chilling Hour so I don't know much there. Maybe HD is looking for critics this season?! That way I could see it all and have fun that way. Crap...What is a Witch to do!

Why are you mad that someone made a "13th Floor" haunted house?

Skelterbet
07-20-2008, 11:22 AM
Hmmmm.....

Well, we have 13th Street Manor, the 13th Door, and now the 13th Floor. Might as well capitalize on the urban legend. Makes sense to me.

I'll go see it.

Hellraiser15
07-20-2008, 02:50 PM
ill go see it. it just bugs me that someone is making that house just for tricking people into thinking its that one that your cousins ex-girlfriends brothers friend only made it halfway hrough

Luv2BScared
07-21-2008, 07:38 PM
But is it a trick really? I don't think so...anyone who really wanted to know about the so called house that no one can make it through could do some research on the internet...it's easy enough to find even if you're not internet savvy. I think people are very naive when it comes to rumors of any kind and then get mad and blame someone else when they find out they bought into something that was clearly not true. I think it's a fun play on a years old urban legend....will there be people that will think it is THE house that no one makes it through? Yep. Will they be mad when they get through the whole thing? Some will, some won't. Can't please everyone all of the time. People just need to take the blinders off and use some common sense.

Here's the fun part about the 13th Floor in my opinion. Every year, at every haunt, no matter how lame it may be, there is at least one person that cannot make it through. Some people have a very low tolerance to being scared and they just can't do it. There will be that one person who can't make it through the 13th Floor, and they will go around telling everyone who cares to listen that no one makes it through. (They don't want to be known as a wuss) The rumor will live on to some degree and there will be enough misinformation floating around that it will probably remain alive and well for years to come.

Then the fun will really begin....someone who did make it through will talk to the person who didn't and tell them that it's just a haunt and a play on a rumor. The person who didn't make it will justify their cowardice by saying something like, "No, you don't understand dude!! It was WAY bad when I went, but because people were passing out in there and stuff the cops came and shut them down..the city made them change it cuz' they were scared poeple were gonna die in there. You saw it AFTER the changes were made, so you don't even know what it was like."

Can you hear it now? I can. I'm thinking the real entertainment may not be the haunt itself, it may be in the parking lot and the que line. I will definitely have to go and just listen to the conversations that happen there!

That's awesome! It is so true. Just hearing people in line they do that about any haunted house but it'll be moreso at a place with that sort of hype on the rumor front.

on the news of closings

Chilling Hour - best of luck to them; it is tough to break into a market like that when you're 3 miles from the Frigthmare Titans, 5 miles from Field of Corpses and 6 miles from The Asylum.

Murray's Massacre - We all know I really liked it 3 years ago (or was it 2 now???) even more, though, we all know why I think that they closed, right or wrong, so I don't need to reiterate here. Either way, I would've loved to see them return to how their winning formula.

As far as the "1 more" I have an idea on that one and since speculation gets you everywhere (even if it's only up s#!t creek) I'd love to say it but I don't want to bring it up because even if I'm right I might be accused of insider information. Now I'm nothing if not impropietous but I don't want to put anyone in that canoe up the creek with me.

I laugh a lot now still thinking back to Scream Park. When I worked there, I had more calls over the radio to look for lost cell phones from GUYS then girls. They were lost as they RAN through a spot and would drop their phone. I would have to slow down the que lines and try to go through with a flashlight and look for it. It would never be in the same areas. Each person does have their own area of what scares them. That what makes this industry soooo much fun, talk is the cheapest way to advertise. Both for good and the bad.

It is normally 1 long house Hell, 2 years ago they separated it out into 2 houses. Last year back to one. I am not sure yet this year, last I talked to them they were still talking about it.

I can remember some nights when it was slow, I would get into the house and help out and my favorite spot was with the air gun spot in the resident evil section. I would lay on the ground under a hearse and spray them as they walked by. I have NEVER seen soooo many big ass grown men jump sooo high!!! God I love being an actor. It is a high like no other.

My favorite last year at Six flags was the darkened out hallway where they couldn't see me until too late, there was a group of handsome older men, that were all tough and when I ran out of my corner and made all my noise they screamed so loud I was deaf for a few. Those are the people that will talk and help advertise for any house. They are the ones with money. Kids I find sometimes aren't as easy to please. They may not talk as much.

It's funny to really scare someone unexpectedly!! That's one of my favorite things about haunts...watching everybody either freeze, or run like mad trying to get away. It's funny the different reactions you see in people when they're scared.

I loved Scream Park two years ago. Haunted Denver Night was cool - it was awesome to meet some of the Critics and to meet some of the regulars on the Boards.

WW - you rock! I had so much fun that I brought some friends to see it later that year and you totally got him with the air gun! I almost fell over because it was so funny! He still talks about it.

We missed Scream Park last year for a variety of reasons (we missed Asylum too). I hope to go this year.

So does that make 5 haunted houses for them? Their website still lists 13th Door, CarnEvil, Dead Before Dawn and Curse of <strike>unlicensed characters</strike> Slaughterhouse Gulch. By my count, if you add 25th Hour *carry the one* yeah, that's 5 attractions. Well at least now I can get a bulk pass that hsould bring it down to $15 without a can of food... Lol, being a critic I know you understand, you have to go through it. There came a point where I didn't have to go anymore (although I still do because I'm an optimist and the Starland group seems to take genuine interest in what people say about them and improving so I hope that they actually listen). If you go onto their forums too they constantly put out feelers as to what people are looking for. It seems though that when they do listen they just take the ideas and disperse them between 6-12 unfinished locations.

I'll never forget when I went through the 13th Door 2 years ago (this season will make it 3 years) and they had built a hotel lobby that was unpainted wood with a drill was sitting on the "counter," and that was over a week into the season. Well I don't know about you but I can't be bothered with the details but that's a story for a different post.

So I'm tallying 6 attractions, if that's like anything last year (or their history) it'll be 3 Locations (we know it's a minimum of 4 because of the Parker Square location and the Chatfield Corn Maze). Plus does anyone know anything about their new one: The Butcher?

Luv2BScared
08-16-2008, 11:27 AM
I enjoy going to all of the haunts in town because as I said before there is something good in each one.I like to see the creativity in each house. I have a very deep love for all things scary and creepy and it tends to make me hypercritical at times. While I appreciate the hard work that goes into each and every haunt, I'm a firm believer that there should be a true passion for what you are doing as a haunt owner. If you have no passion for what you are doing, my feeling is that you will only produce a mediocre product at best. That goes for staffing as well. If your staff is only there for a check or out of boredom you won't get good results.
I would much rather see one haunt that has the heart and soul of the staff poured in than any number that appear to be an afterthought. Attention to detail is a must for me, and authenticity is critical. If I don't really feel that I am truly in a haunted place, it doesn't matter how cool some of the props are, or how many rooms it has, I'm just not impressed.
I have a friend that is a film producer that I work for and he has been scouting locations for a horror movie. While we have been out looking at old abandoned properties I can tell you that some of those empty places scared me more in broad daylight than haunts I've been to. They're scary because they are authentic. The remnants of squatters, old mattresses on the floor, forgotten toys, boarded up rooms, etc. We just never know what we may run into in those places because we have never gone into any of them with a realtor. We just run across them and go in and check it out. There are a couple of places in Loveland and Ft. Collins that could easily be VERY scary with very little effort simply because they are authentic.
I think sometimes haunt owners try too hard and forget that the simple things can be very scary. For the vast majority of people, being in an almost dark place, disoriented, hearing something moving in there with them is enough to make their blood run cold. If they smelled like musty, rotting wood, the floors creaked, the door hinges were in desperate need of some oil, and every step you took made you wonder if you were going to fall through the floor, that in and of itself is enough to get your mind racing. Using tactics that alter proprioception is the best way to acheive the end result that haunt owners are looking for, yet no one utilizes it as well as they could. Studying up on the physics and mechanics of how the human body truly works could go a long way in producing some very disturbing haunts. It is very easy to disorient someone in broad daylight in any setting if you understand how proprioception really works. Imagine what you could do in a haunt with that knowledge!!
Props and animatronics are cool, but if I ran into a truly deranged person at night in one of these houses we've been looking at, that would scare me far more simply because it's real. I would love to see a haunt add that type of authenticity. I'm not scared of Freddy or Jason. Not scared of aliens or zombies. They aren't a possibilty in the real world. Now, put a Jeffrey Dahmer type in an abandoned house you'll have my attention simply because it has happened in the real world, and will happen again somewhere. It's a twisted world we live in with some very twisted souls. Let's explore that a bit for once.
Wow, wasn't planning on a rant, but there's my ten dollars and two cents!! http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Hahaha, speaking of abandon places..did anyone ever get to check out the old Gates Rubber Plant factory off of broadway before they started to tear it down? That was one place that really creeped me out. I went there a long time ago with a few friends, broken glass everywhere, old document papers, needles, shoes/clothing scattered all over. It was really cool to explore and look around, and there was a really strange, off feeling to the atmosphere in there. I loved it. Another fun thing to do and have a glimpse at some other places like that is to "google" urban exploration, and you can find tons of pictures of genuinely creepy abandoned places.

I grew up by Gates and we went through a tour while it was open. Scared me so bad I had nightmares for months. Never went in after it closed, wish I had. I'm gonna go hit google now! Thanks for the tip!! I love this site for the pics as well. They really say authentic haunt to me....www.obscureplaces.org

Hmm, don't think I've ever seen the sugar mill, sounds cool though. Loveland really really creeps me out for some reason. There's also some really creepy places in Commerce City.

The warehouses in Commerce City over by 50th ave are pretty creepy...there's some places there that I wouldn't want to go to during the day let alone at night.

OHH!! I know exactly where you're talking about. My friends and I were driving through that exact area late at night, and my friends car stalled and we were stuck around there for atleast 45 mins or so. Pretty creepy.

Old warehouse districts just put off some kind of weird thing. Not sure why, but they are scary. There's one in Brighton off highway 85 that is the same way. It's an old factory, windows broken out, etc.
there's a farm property in Loveland that is straight Texas Chainsaw Massacre that I love. There's lot's of old garages, barns, and chicken coops that are downright freaky! And the house is just twisted. There's a makeshift set of stairs that go up to this weird room with a crawlspace that has weird stuff in it. The whole place just says ewwwwwwwwwwwww.
And in Ft. Collins there's an abandoned house that has a bedroom upstairs that makes my skin crawl. Every time I have walked into that room, I've had to walk right back out. Not sue why, but just get this very bad feeling in there. Don't wanna be in there at all.

Aghhhhhhhh, to me that sounds really cool. I wanna find those places! Growing up here with my parents and going up to the mountains on ocassion gave me the opportunity to see some really cool ghost towns and some really really old abandoned places in the middle of no where. I remember we found this really old school. Inside there were books, toys and a pair of glasses left on the ground. And another time, we found this lake at a tundra area, and there was this old boarded up restraunt from the 1900's that still had all their tables set on the inside. It was really creepy.

On another note..I don't know how true this is or if any of you have heard about it. But there is suposedly this place in Parker that if you drive to, and have you're radio on the signal starts to freak out and make these really weird, creepy noises, and I guess the area is supposed to be really haunted, hah, who knows though, I'm still yet to check it out.

I've been there. It's damned creepy. I recommend going with a group of people and some sort of face mask. I'm sure that place is overrun with asbestos.

It may not be a bad idea to bring something hard and heavy with you like a maglight. That place is a hobo hotel and who knows what kinds of crazies are hangin' out.

If you go the big pile of sugar in the basement is for sure something to see.

I'm pretty sure it's really really really far down Parker Rd, but I'm not sure. I just know it's out in the middle of nowhere. I went to the sand dunes last year, and on the way out we ended up at this really creepy weird place, Hooper, Colorado. Strangest people/town I've ever seen. They also have this "Alien UFO Watch Tower" there too, and I went there and took a tour and talked to the owner, it was a trip. I also remember once when I was driving into Utah, deep in the desert, in the middle of nowhere, we passed this town that looked like a junkyard pretty much with atleast 30 residents. People living in collapsed building, buses, other weird places. & of course it had a local gas station/bbq shack. Haha, reminded me of Texas Chainsaw and The Hills Have Eyes. It was really cool to check out though.

I wish my friends were into this kind of stuff...all this sounds SO exciting to me. I want to find places exactly like that.

Anyone know of any more?

And where exactly in Ft Collins or Loveland?

The Sugar Mill in Longmont again is awesome. It is a few miles off of I-25. First you Exit I-25 for Longmont, then go West. Take that strait until you see it looming right in front of you (It's on 3rd ave.) I suggest parking a bit away and walking over.

I dont believe they ended up making the 25th hour. Check the sites. But you're right I did forget about the house of fear. That one just sorta shot outta nowhere

and while on the topic, why isn't the butcher, 13th door, or curse of slaughterhouse gulch listed on haunted denver?

You may be right about The 25th Hour...I hope it is back, along with the guy that worked the door....he was super creepy!! I guess we'll see what happens.

As for the haunts you asked about and why they are not on the site, that would be best directed to Chris.
