View Full Version : First Sign Of The Season?

This is bittersweet for me really because I love the haunted house season because I see friends (yes, I have friends, some of you may disagree but I haven't pissed off everyone yet) and seeing what's changed in my favorite attractions. At the same time though I'm a fan of Spring and Summer and when the season gets rolling, say mid-September, everything starts dying and I've got around 7 months of short days, cold weather and bleak landscape. All of which has it's own merits but I prefer to be hot to cold, I prefer late nights to short ones and I prefer green to brown.
All that aside there are a few tell-tale signs for me that signal the start of the haunted house season and some come much sooner than others. In fact, I think I saw my first trigger yesterday which I think is unseasonably early but that doesn't matter I suppose: it's coming whether I'm ready for it or not.
Harvest Moon: That's right, beer. Pumpkin beer to be specific. Of course I had to pick it up which the guy told me had just come in earlier that day which was validated by the fact that it hadn't even been fully chilled. It was good but after last year I've come to realize that it is definitely seasonally oriented and it tastes much, much better after a cold night at a haunted house.
To me, 1st week in August still is too early for me to start thinking about Fall just yet but I guess there's no stopping it now. What does it for you?

20 MPH school zones signal the start of the season for me. No longer can I drive 90 MPH through residential neighborhoods near the schools because the traffic nazi will pull me over and give me a ticket equivalent to a year's salary, and probably shoot my dog again.
Then, the nights get cooler and the mornings start having a hint of the brisk fall mornings I have come to love and embrace.
I too don't care for the short days, or the short nights, and the dreary days take their toll on my good humor at times. I do enjoy that the shorter days inspire me to actually get some of the much needed sleep I have missed out on all summer.
I love the change of the leaves, but feel a sense of sadness when they all fall off, but then relish the sound of crunching around in the HUGE piles I rake up.
Fall is my favorite season for a multitude of reasons. It's a bit cooler...football and hockey season start, Halloween, harvest festivals, hot cider, pumpkin pie and Thanksgiving to name a few.

One more thing...it's just chilly enough tonight to build a fire, so I did. The chill, the rain, the fire all help to warm my cold, black heart and get me geared up for another awesome season!

Well, the weather we had the past few days really got me thinking, man did it feel like fall or what. For my own reasons I'm really hoping for an Indian Summer. For everyone else, the quicker it turns to haunt season!
Perm, I agree, Harvest Moon is quite possibly the most fantastic pumpkin beer out there, despite being brewed by one of the big boys. I can't get enough of it this time of year. Oh yeah, please drink in moderation http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Awesome, That's what made me start thinking about fall too! Wednesday, I was picking up some beer for my GF's softball game and saw the Harvest Moon hanging around. I was tempted, but I was worried that it was awful. According to you guys it may actually be decent.
At least I did pick up a bottle of something else that could fit the October season: Avery's Mephistopheles' Stout. At 16%, that stuff is wicked powerful.

Hello everyone! It's good to be back and getting excited for the season. I just thought I would drop my 2 cents on the start of the season - it was triggered just the other day for me when I walked into Walgreens and noticed they ahd all their Halloween stuff up for sale. I nearly dropped my phone and instantly felt like a kid again. Best feeling ever. here's to a great 2008 haunt season!

Couple of weekends ago, when it got cold, I was able to use my fireplace all weekend! The smell of firewood burning, hot soup and socks on my broom handle got me in gear to realize where the hell did this year go!!. I am very excited about Halloween and having fun, but with that comes Christmas. Crap it is just around the corner also. When I was a young witch time went soooo slow, then you get my age and it goes so fast.

Socks on your broom handle?
Anyway, I know what you mean (socks aside) - time flies for me now that I am older. Of course, that means that Halloween and Haunt season come around faster (a good thing). Otherwise aging sucks.
Christmas is much more tolerable now that I know Jack Skellington is going to hijack it. I think we, the fans of the best holiday of the year, should put up appropriate decorations for it. Nothing says Christmas quite like Evil Snowmen and Vampiric Elves. Maybe Jack will give us some tarantulas or vampire bats if we've been 'good'...

There is a certain smell that the air gets when fall is arriving... for me, its very intimate....
There is an aroma that awakens me every year that I smell when I open the door every morning to go to school or work... its a comforting feeling that everything is going to be amazingly fun, exciting, and new....reminds me of kids in the streets with halloween costumes, candy, haunted houses, pumpkins, rides, chocolate, and everything that makes us warm.... http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

One of my seasonal albums that I listen to in the Fall is Origin of Symmetry by Muse. The first song that starts out, "New Born", always reminds me of a dark, brooding, night time setting, with leaves falling, chilly weather, strong gusts of wind, moonlight, and some ax murderer chasing you through the fields. hehehe. in fact, it was used at the end of the movie "High Tension". I always wait to listen to it until i see the leaves start to change.

Things like Years Ago by Alice Cooper or Partytime by 45 grave.
Has anyone heard Who will take my Dreams Away? by Marianne Faithfull? It is pretty cool...and creepy when you consider her hit from the 70s Dreaming my Dreams. It was in the movie The City of Lost Children.

I guess that wasn't very helpful, sorry about that. I'll try again. It's off of I-270 and Dahlia St. Here's a link to Mapquest:

It's in Commerce City near the Dog Track. It's kinda a ghetto neighborhood, but the haunts themselves are typically worth the trip.[/b]
Hey, I live in Commerce City. It is an old, less expensive neighborhood, but not a ghetto not even close. That area has older people living their. Granted it is not the greatest town, but were not that bad. My parents still live only 1 minute from the dog track. In addition, did you know Commerce City has Million dollars homes their?

I didn't mean to offend, Sorry if I did. I know that there are decent parts of Commerce City.
I just remember the drive to the haunts and it certainly did not seem to be in the nicer parts. The haunts own website even says: "The owners have suggested that you keep your windows rolled-up until you enter the gated compound at the haunted house as a precaution."

Hey Rev... that disclaimer could also be understood to mean something non- town related and more towards the haunt itself. Like be careful, the monsters might get loose and get you out by the parking lot. If it was town related I would think it would be more like, lock your doors and drive fast into the secure gated compound or you will be in trouble. I would be more concerned if they can open my door then if my window was rolled up or not. That would be an terrible way to market a haunt by saying hey come see me, spend money at my haunt but btw the neighborhood is full of crime and you may have something happen to you by the people who live close by or are close by, but hey, come anyways!

The area where the haunt is at is an older area of Commerce City, but not full of crime. I understand that if you don't live in that area where you could get that idea, but I saw the same comments last year (not by you) and to see it again makes me a little angry. Commerce City gets a bad rap all the time. Have a good time at the haunt though!

Once again I'm sorry if I offended, that was not my intent at all. I've never lived in Commerce City and I admit that I have very little experiences there. Mort, you would for sure know better than I would about the area. I'm going to drop the topic to not make an obviously unpleasant situation worse.

Gotta chime in here....Commerce City does get a bad rap all the time..I lived there for 6 years and really loved it. There is a mix of industrial and residential and that is what gives it the "Inner City" look that it has. The thing I loved about CC that I have not found anywhere else is the STRONG sense of community from the residents. The majority of people who live in CC are hard working, family people. Are there parts of CC that are less than perfect, yes. But that is true of any city in any state. I would walk through CC alone at night LONG before I'd walk through outher cities, no problem.
The disclaimer on the site about rolling the windows up, to me says, watch out for the creepy things near the haunt...not anything about the neighborhood.

Just one thought on the "keep your windows rolled up" -- I always assumed that was a joke based on the fact that HauntPlex always (used to, at least) has actors in costume lurking in the parking lot. I never thought it was meant to be a commentary on Commerce City. I could be wrong, but I thought it was just part of the backstory.

OPPS. You didn't stay to the right; bad thing about Commerce City is the road signs. Glad you had fun. PS That would be a GREAT place for a haunted house. http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

well the parking lot is part of the "gated compound" and they say leave window up until you get into "gated " compund" So i would take it they don't like the area outside of where they are at.

Okay, I realize you want to keep Commerce City from getting a bad rap, but if you're defending the SMELL of Commerce City, it's not going to happen. Denver might smell like smog but Commerce City reeks of oil refineries and landfills.
If we're judging based on smell alone, there's no way you'll ever convince me that Commerce City is not the stinky butthole of Colorado. http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif

Greeley is a close second. Nothing better then going to Greeley and getting some authentic awesome mexican food, visiting Distortions and taking a big whiff of milker delight which would always blow into Loveland when I was growing up. YUMMERS!
