It's always a tough call to say who we expect to be most improved for an upcoming season. There is no way to predict what could happen. There have been haunts that were amazing the year before and then for reasons beyond their control had a tough run the following year. There are haunts that stay pretty predictable year after year and then suddenly ramp up unexpectedly. It's too varying to speculate. And we don't have any information about the haunts until we go through them, so it's a surprise to us as well.
The only advice I can give is to either wait for reviews to go up, or read reviews from last season and make your choices based on that.

I expect to have a lot of fun watching my friends (and strangers) scream and run from the monsters and chainsaw guys.
I can't wait...
Beyond that, I don't know know what will be improved. After all, they mostly already provide what I love...

Well for me, I am really excited for The 13th Floor...and Asylum of course...and all the usuals, but I am hoping to venture away from Denver and try out Ft Collins or Co Sprins or something like that http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Well, being my own critic of sorts, I'm personally looking forward to the Starland haunted houses. No, no, hear me out:
I've been a vocal critic of the, well I'll say it, "poor" product that they put out. Moreover who do they think they are fooling by bringing back "Denver's Newest Unoriginal Idea?" I suppose switching to a different part of town that they're trying to saturate the market with their same *overpriced product.
They do have some things that are noteworthy though: like the return of Denver's exclusive haunted attraction for unlicensed horror characters or the first trailer attraction (complete with mullets, wife beaters and old milwaukee) which is a great concept if it's done right but given their record you probably don't need to hold your breath.
Well, at least the Butcher sounds promising and by promising I mean new and by new I mean a new name on an old product.
Cheers to the season I can't wait for those piles!
*overpriced product means without the can of food, with the can of food then oh, it's totally cheap, plus even haunted house owners need to eat.

Hey everyone!
Ok shameless plug, but I'm looking forward to The Reinke Bros as usual. Sure I work there, but I've already seen some of the changes they've made to some rooms and it's beautiful. Sure we're not gory and gross, but we're still scary and fun!

Hey, creeps-Which haunts are top priority on opening night? I usually give 'em all a week to work out the kinks.

i never go on preview night. I just dont think its worth it. you need to give em time to get on their game.

I never have a top priority haunt on opening night. In my humble opinion if a haunt is open for business and charging admission they should be putting on their best show every time. The first show should be as good as the last and they should strive for consistency. That being said, I also always take into account that a haunt is a live show and things can and will go wrong that are beyond the control of the owners. I visit most haunts several times each every season and there is usually something that is somewhat different each time I go. Those variations come from the number of actors that are there, weather, and most important, guests. Guests can dramatically change the atmosphere of a haunt by their behavior.

In my humble opinion I have to disagree when people say that haunts should charge less on "preview weekend" if they don't have their "best show" going. If this were true then there are lots of Rockies games that I would like to get some money back from, haha.
I'm not saying they have an excuse to be completely lousy though. If a haunt is at 90% of what they are going to be during the rest of the season then think of opening weekend as being a trade off. While they may not have their best show going you are sure to find nearly non-existent lines and probably a whole lot of spacing while you're going through.
Just my thoughts.

i agree...i really enjoy going through haunts the first part of the season because there are really, no lines, and spacing is CRUCIAL to my haunt experience...
but then again, haunts do get better later in the season, but then again, some haunts dont have all the actors later on because they quit and things like that

People definitely quit, but at least the ones that quit are usually the ones that are less enthusiastic in the first place.

I'd say that most of the local attractions put out their A game on the "preview" weekend; it's a Friday night, actors are fresh the owners are happy their open and get staunch the bleeding, I personally think that the preview weekends are one of the best times to go.
That said, most of the local attractions are temporary and are rebuilt annually so you would need to realize that of course there are going to be bugs in the system that simply can't be foreseen. However I'll maintain that even the temporary ones that put out a good product put out a good one every year and it's just as good from start to finish. The bad ones get as close to open as they can and don't put any effort into making their product better.
In short, the good ones are good, the bad ones are bad, regardless of when you open.

I love the energy that is in abundance on preview weekend!! But, with opening weekend comes opening weekend problems that are hard to forsee until the whole thing is up and running.

Red is correct on that one. She quit us after short period of time. The die hard fanatics are the ones that remain all season in a house. Those are the actors that every house better take care of! Ignoring them, making them wait for 3 weeks for a call back is stupid and just hurts the house in the long run. Good actors will be picked up by someone else quickly. Preview week is the time when that is weeded out more then anything else. Things that break or don't work will happen regardless of when in the season. That is why "dry" runs are sooo important. I do admit, that I am more tired towards the end then the beginning. It is very hard working a day job and then having fun at night, every night, scaring people for sometimes longer then a month. Takes alot out of someone. All actors should be commended for the work they do. We are a interesting breed! Actors can make or break a house.

Well said Welch!! You can have the best set and props, but without actors that LOVE what they do, it's pointless.
Mad props to all the actors!!! Thanks for bringing the haunts to life!

I'm not saying everything is roses or anything, just that most of the local attractions have respectable business ethics and don't intentionally try and ripoff the customer. Not to mention that there is a sense of pride on the line. I say most because that certainly isn't the case for all of them but for the casual fan preview weekend is the best time to go I'd say.
It's good to be back, just been super busy with, you know, this and that http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif. How you been? (pronounce that like bean in your head just because it sounds better).

It's not a lot when you think about what it takes in terms of money just to get the doors open each year. I have a haunted house savings account that I put money into each month starting in November. By the time Halloween gets here, I have plenty of money to see every haunt.

I'm interested in seeing the 13th floor because of the legend. Its long been known that the 13th floor is an urban legend where they throw reals snakes and spiders on you. and we all know "It costs $150 and if you make it through you get your money back. The Denver Broncos went through and they didn't even make it"...Really...Please? Such bull. I see that every 113 person that makes it through gets their $15 back... nice play on the legend but it should be interesting. The Field of Corpses has always been good though, so i'd suggest that one as a must!

As a fan of all Haunted Houses, I am excited to free up some time and see what some of my fellow haunt builders do this year. Having loved this stuff since I was terrorized as a kid with props and such from the Jaycees haunted houses in Loveland, I have always been in love with this Holiday and haunted houses. My dad had me in a coffin at 4 years old.
I look forward to each house in Denver each year. I always take something away with me.
It is funny to see hidden messages used in Haunted Houses and the expansion of ideas that our normal society presents us. A classic example of this is Brutal Planet. In it's heyday, you could see a lot of Ed Edmund's owner of Distortions Unlimited personality and creativity in his approach to design. If you do not know who Ed is, definitely do some research on the internet.
Along with Ed, there were many artist involved in that haunt that have now ventured out into game design or successful art endeavors. In fact, check this guy out: Adam Adamowicz (http://adamadamowicz.com/AABestOf/Website/DocumentSetUp01/Information/ResumeInfo01.htm)
Adam has now went on to help design the new Fallout 3 game coming out. Do some research on the internet on him and you will see, he is pretty darn good.
So, I can not wait to see what Chris has done with the 13th Floor approach. I am always excited to see the maintained quality of the show at Frightmare. I enjoy seeing Field of Corpses as we have a lot of similarities in our approach, and I am sure I will have to visit my friends at The Reinke Brother's. While I am at it, you have to appreciate someone taking on numerous haunted house designs with the Starland friends. I have not ventured to our friends at Haritage Square, but am intrigued by recent discussions.
A few haunts I miss: Loved the haunt at Bandimere Speedway, miss the old Brutal Planet in the warehouse, loved a one year haunt in Fort Collins called Phantom of the Opera, miss the Lakeside haunts by Mr. Kellog and really enjoyed the haunt in the old Kmart I am pretty sure the Diabolical team put on, I will always remember the Jaycees haunted house in Loveland in an old Sears building down town and always loved the evil carnival in Boulder complete with midway games. Man, I am so glad my Mom and Dad took me to every haunt they could when my brother's and I were young. We loved it so much, the darn home haunt got out of control and we had to stop doing it in Loveland.
Can not wait to see all your hard work and dedication haunted friends.
