Working in a haunt was/is one of the best experiences in my life, hah, cheesy but true. Not only is working in one a lot of fun, there's room for other cool things like self expression. In a sense you can also get to see the psychological side of fear, from scaring people. Pretty cool..
But if you love haunted houses, you'll love working in one. There are endless "pros" that you'll discover, I guarantee you will have a blast. The only "cons" I could think of would be the long nights, and the exhaustion that comes from it all on a busy night, but nothing too bad. At the end of the night, it always feels rewarding for me.
Good luck & have fun!

Be prepared to have your feet hurt, be laughed at, screamed at, run from, ignored, mad at ,body exhausted, bored, excited, have to learn a longer pee dance, possible makeup or blood rolling down into your eyes from the sweat, having to take a shower late at night to wash everything off you before you go to bed, skin raw from trying to get all of that damn spirit gum off your body and out of your hair, being looked at weirdly because you wear black nail polish for one month to laughing your ass off because you can become something you can't be any other time of the year, you can say things that maybe you may never say to anyone else at any other time, to watching grown men jump back or run because you scared the crap out of them and then laughing with their friends in a twisted voice when they see that he has dropped his cell phone as he ran and they had to help find it later on, to eating at Village Inn after the haunt closes because your heart is still pumping so fast you need some pancakes to slow it down, to laying in bed once home to only rethink about the night that just finished and still wide awake tossing and turning to getting up the next morning tired as hell, but pumped because you get to do it all over again!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't forget the Advil. Taken twice daily (more if you are closer to my age) @6:30AM and before the haunts opens.

Question...when you work in a haunt, you obviously see how things are done, the behind the scenes things that make haunts so great.
Does that knowledge make it hard for you to fully enjoy another haunt because you know the "magic" behind the scene?
I've always been curious about that and thought this was a good place to ask.

Big Perm

Well, I love building things, I love envisioning things and I love seeing the finished project so personally, that's a 50/50 question meaning yes and no.

Being behind the scenes to me, on any sort of production, does sort of dispel the magic that you originally thought was there because now you know how it's done and the mystique is gone. However, now you know how it's done (good or bad) and it gives you a new level of appreciation on how things should look.

Luv2BScared
09-28-2008, 11:21 AM
Good point...but then if I know how they should look, that would disappoint me if they weren't the way they should be. Good thing I never worked in a haunt.

True, true and there's a lot to be said for that but some people simply do things better than others, example: the Asylum's "barn" vs. Frightmares barn. Or spray painted neon flames on the wall...

i guss some times it dose mess it up i because you know were a scare is going to be most of the time . and it also pust that stupid ego in you that makes you feel like your house is better. But some time there are things you wouldint even expect to see because you spind all that year working on your room in the hunt and then when you do get time to get out and check a nother one out it hase some good idas .

I personally enjoy real metal flames http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Some nice, beat up, rusty metals painted as flames.

That is the ticket.

Oh man, am I excited for this year!

What to expect working in a haunt http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I would recommend being a leader, and being able to really attach yourself to the vision of the haunt owner, your fellow actors and scene. Pay close attention to items that are in your scene to make your scare more effective. Use your body language, face, and all that you have. Be responsible for your actions and even take the mindset of what you would want to see in a haunted house and in an actor in a movie.

Then comes the ache bones, headaches from the same song over and over in a room and little sleep. Significant others have to be very understanding during this time as you truly do become somewhat of a zombie in the real world. The best thing any haunt owner or other actors that really enjoy this stuff appreciate is little complaining and drama and dependable scares night in and night out.

You will do awesome! Leave the reality at the door and scare them even more! Report back here and let us know how you are enjoying it and what you are learning along the way. We would all love to hear I am sure.

Have a great season!

Honestly, I think that this is THE only drawback to working a haunt. You do get to see a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff, and may eventually get to the point where you can walk into a room and point out exactly where the actors will come from. It's kind of a letdown.

On the other hand, my GF says she still gets scared when she goes to haunts, and she's worked probably as many if not more years than I did, overall. I suppose it depends on you.

Speaking of which, doing haunts with her this year should be fun.. http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ph34r.gif

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I was a haunted house worker before I was a haunted house critic. Worked at Frightmare for two years when I shouldn't have even been old enough to be legitimately scary. It was the funnest thing I ever did.

I have been building and acting in haunts for a long time now. I still really love going out to visit and see what else is out there. There is always those scenes and actors who just floor me. Frightmare 2005, had this beautiful scarecrow scene, and the actor got a jump out of me,and thats hard ta do,i dont scare easy! Their cave! IM jealous of that thing! its badass! For me to even get out to see other peoples work is a real treat. Milker ,the brothers Grimm and myself , will finally get out and see F.O.C. It will be my first visit to see what Zach can do. I have had the chance to meet Zack and a few actors at our haunt, so its gonna be really cool to get out and see his work. Of course i think we will stop out and see the Asylum,or their new haunt 13 something. Maybe Frightmare too. I wish i had time and the money to see them all! Hauntplex is always pretty cool, those guys have always been very cool to me,and fun to talk too. We are all competing to be the best , and thats what makes it really fun for me. Its like fantasy football, i wanna kick my pals ass every Sunday, but in the end were all just loving playing the game ! Hats off to everybody out there putting on a show. Its alot of blood sweat and tears. Its hard work and takes devotion and time. Somebody scare the shart outa me tonight please! Love all of ya man! Rock yer asses on the 10th

It gave me a healthy respect for just how much is involved in pulling off each scene successfully.

But although I mentioned that I was a haunt worker before I was a haunt critic, I was also a haunt-goer before I was a haunt worker. My dad took me to my first when I was just a kid. It scared the hell out of me, but I was immediately hooked.

I also knew that my mom's family had run an attraction on their farm by Standley Lake for years before I was born, and I had grown up seeing pictures of their creativity, so I guess it was only natural that I was drawn to the industry.

DarkKefka , We did come out and see Foc Saturday. Let me say that you guys kicked major ace! Sets, acting, length. What a pleasure it was to finally see this haunt in action. F.O.C was, and is worth every penny of my money. We went to three haunts and by far you guys win my vote. The rest of our crew enjoyed it as well. Dennis was a real cool guy to talk to. The Z MAN really knows how to put on a show! I will make it a point to go see them every year now . That haunt is special. If ya have anything to do with this haunt ,be proud! Oh sorry bout the Tye thing. To many haunts ,to many names. That will never happen again. Sorry! Thank you F.O.C For the best haunt I have seen in years.

it would definitely give the respect for each scene. Just going through and taking a good look at the sets reveals how much effort goes into each and every one. I always want to stop people in haunts that I see hurrying through. I want to slow then down and tell them, "Look what you're missing!!"

We were able to go see FOC, Frightmare and Asylum last night. Wanted to go see the new one 13 door or floor or something. Have to forgive me on that one, I get those 2 confused on the names. But we got there too late. What a major blast. So much fun to get out and see what the other houses are doing to get your self into the mood. Zack at FOC and all the other actors there sooo rock!!!! It does become very hard to be a guest and still try to get scared. Even though all I wanted to do is to look at every scene in detail, I find that if I don't it can help me get into the moment better to allow the actor who is busting their ass get their desired affect from me. And I admit some got me good. I have my major favorites in a couple of houses and was lucky enough to tell them they were awesome. Good job, I agree with Vamp, we are all doing the same thing and everyone should get kudos for trying. You will never see me as a haunt owner because I know all the crap they go through. So MAJOR Kudos to them and to us freaky little actors, we are the peanut butter that makes my jelly soooooo dayum good!!!!!!!!!!!

Vamp and Witch,

Ok, ok I take the bait. It's late, I haven't been getting to sleep till about 3 am so maybe it's early, but anyway,

It's 13th Floor, I'm sure you didn't know that though. It's completely understandable that you don't know the name of the haunt you were going to. Honest mistake, and of course 13th Floor is a haunted house name no one has heard of before. I guess for others there may have been some confusion in the past, but thank goodness that's all over, no more confusion now.

If you want to check it out some more, there is a listing for it on Haunted Denver, or you could visit the website at 13thfloorhauntedhouse.com (http://www.13thfloorhauntedhouse.com)

I'm sorry that we sold out before you arrived, by reading your posts I'm sure everyone is confused as to why I didn't make an exception and get your group in.

Thanks though, your posts did give me a good chuckle!

Have fun working at Screamfield, er Screampark, sorry.

Chris

PS - I hope Vamp isn't Jason that I spoke to when you guys came to 13th Floor, if you are, you certainly seemed sincere when you said you were happy to see that we were successful, so I really hope it's not you, you seemed like a nice guy. After I recognized you, I also remembered that you seemed the same way when we first met last year. Hope it's not the case.

Even though all I wanted to do is to look at every scene in detail, I find that if I don't it can help me get into the moment better to allow the actor who is busting their ass get their desired affect from me. And I admit some got me good. I have my major favorites in a couple of houses and was lucky enough to tell them they were awesome.[/b]

Wish I'd known who to look for... I was in the very last room that night, and I'm thinking that may be my new post... definitely got some good scares in there >:-) Glad you enjoyed it!

Dark... if I remember correctly, you got my and my friend real good. We had 2 guys in our group behind us laughing their asses off at us. My friend was the tall blond and I was a shorter brunette. We were there little after opening. If you don't remember us, its cool, we had a blast with you!

can't say that I can picture you off the top of my head, (maybe I'd recognize you if I saw you again) but the people who really stand out in my mind from that night are mostly the people who really irritated me, with a couple exceptions.

I definitely think we end on a real high note this year, and I have a lot of fun in that room.

Btw, your "signature" reminds me that people going to haunted houses in skirts, and the ocassional kilt, with nothing underneath ought to be aware that there are often people who see your "cash-and-prizes"... Just a word of warning.

Chris , indeed that was me who who talked to you ,outside of your new haunt. I also meant what i said . I am very happy for a new haunt or any haunt with sellout crowds, waiting in line. You were also kind enough to call the Asylum for us and make sure we didn't drive all that way, only to find that they stopped selling tickets also. I honestly wasn't sure what the haunt was called, i only knew it started with Thirteen, and would never try and bait you or call you out. I have nothing to gain by doing so. I have refrained from ever posting anything negative towards any haunt. Its not professional and these forums shouldn't be an outlet for other people in this industry to bash on one another s hard work. I apologize for my name slander and ,hope that you can see that i do care about this industry as a whole. This is my passion, I have not seen my wife in a few months and sleep is rare. Anyone involved with what we all do ,has my respect . I think you may have taken my post the wrong way. I didn't arrive at your haunt expecting any special treatment. Ya sucked that is was sold out. But great for you and all involved. I hope you can find it within you to see that yes I was sincere in my greetings to you the other night. I can only hope we get at least one sell out crowd at Screamingfields ! We are in the middle of nowhere , and gas aint cheap! Have a great season! Jason

No, really... haunted houses afford a person many interesting benefits, and that is one of the more unique ones, though not always a benefit http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif

Coming out from under the gallows and such... I just thought I should throw that out there for anyone who might want to reconsider their outfit for such an occasion...

Jason,

I don't know man, for someone who seems to be fairly tuned in to the local haunts, and has been around a while, I'm having a hard time believing you didn't know the name of the haunt you were going to, especially since it appeared you were travelling with an unusually large group, certainly some of them knew where they were going. You frequent the boards, and I'm sure you've read plenty of posts about the 13th Floor in the past.

I'm curious what you're group was up to, I know our crew has had no time to go out to see any of the other haunts in town, and find it curious that such a large group could make time to get out so close to your opening. By the way, when do you guys open, seems like there's been quite a bit of conflicting information about that.

I agree with you, these boards are a good place to communicate, however, even I have probably given in to making a comment or two that may not have been the nicest idea.

I'll say again, the two times I have met you, you've seemed like a decent guy, and I appreciate your comments in your last post.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, just seems like there's more going on here than what has been said.

I hope it's a good season for everyone, and more and more people go out to check out haunted houses, that's the goal of Haunted Denver, and in turn the October Lounge.

Not sure why there is confusion, between Milker's postings, the calander under the attractions site for Scream Park and Haunted Denver calling last weekend its been known. But to answer your question Chris, yes we are open on Friday. This Friday the 10th.

The best index to a person's character is how he treats people who can't do him any good, and how he treats people who can't fight back.

Witch,

What I know is that the critics team didn't get all of the reviews done that they had planned, because Screampark wasn't open. The critics team makes their own schedule, in particular, Kris the critics team lead does. Not speaking for her, but judging from how on top of things she is, I really don't see here organizing the team to drive out to Brighton, not knowing if you were going to be open or not.

As far as what's on Haunted Denver, I don't do any of my own web work. I know Kris sent emails out to the haunts about their information, and I know our web designers used that information, and if they didn't get that information used whatever information was available to update the site.

I've been made aware that this would be the first time someone was supposed to be open and wasn't, but not the first time someone was supposed to be closed, and wasn't.

If there was a misunderstanding, so be it.

Milker,

Really? Dear Abby?

Chris

As in fight back in their death! We are all characters you see. Some of us have a choice to live or die. In our city that decision is easy. We make it for you.

Dear Abby is dead in this city and has been a long time. The letters have fallen on deaf ears and now we have no way to make moral decisions in the habitat of these walls. The dead are among us, we chose how to utilize what is left. Shall we tear down what has been done and rebuild out of the living.

We shall decide our destiny into what the future holds for this municipal establishment. This society creates it's own issues and is trapped into the walls of the surrounding experience!

Acting in a haunted house will bring about your character, how you present yourself to your customers. Are you truly insane within the room you are given to act out this haunted experience. Are you using the space and the customer to create the perfect character.

Take for instance Dear Abby. Now there is a room I would like to do. I see a well to do lady all tidy and with high cheek bones, quill pens in her hat, and ink smears all over. As the actor, I would love this spot. I would have dead bodies on the floor from those people who wrote me letters I did not like. Heck, I could even have their letters attached to their bodies with a quill pen as the device to thier end. The things I could scream would be "Your letter was ridiculous, get some common sense", or you should have never written that letter, sincerely yours!!!" Have fun as an actor, this is our only shot during the year.

Have a deadly day!

Alright.....everyone out of the sandbox and back to haunting!!! Geeezzz, leave for a day or two and look what happens!! (I'm kidding so don't anyone get jumpy) http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

It appears that there is a feeling that there was some miscommunication about whether or not SP was open. In going back and reviewing everything, it could very well be that the mistake may have been mine. (Pick your jaws up off the floor everyone, yes, I too am human and therefore fallible)
It appears that the misunderstanding was mine and mine alone as I misread the posting for the OL two for one night on the tenth and did not realize that it was also opening night at SP. The main season opened on the 3rd. as we all know and in my speed reading I misread the information that was sent to me. I am sorry for the confusion, there was no harm no foul as it was really just on our way to the other stops we were making.
Now, if the critics team feels they need to drag me behind a vehicle, they certainly may do so.

Final thought~~~~~~Can't we all just get along???? http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

Frolic is what I do best, in fact, I tend to add a skip and a jump to my frolicking (licking being the key component there). Brother's have got to hug man. We cleaned out the garbage and decided for whom the bell tolls. We now know who the bell rings for; it is you Denver. We all live in the City of the Dead. Till death do us part!

Bring your pus infested eyes our way. Prepare the Halloween puss for it's ride on the broom; our city is ready.

Vampfire, did you get the plumbing fixed in the city yet?

Back to the original content of this discussion, I wish each actor a very great year. You have a week up on us, but we will be representing the awesome haunt actors of Denver starting tonight. You all bring life to these twisted details and haunted houses.

I hope you all scare them to the floor.

Nah, It's all good from my end. We just got a few moments of confusion and then a bit of a laugh in the car. Really no harm. We'll just pick it up a bit later I suppose.
