So my dad is doing relief work in Louisiana, and he told me on the phone the other day that they went to a haunted house in Baton Rouge. He knows haunted houses and has been to quite a few. He was a critic one of the first years of Haunted Denver, as well. Anyway, he said that not only was it the best haunted house he'd ever seen, but that it was rated the best haunted house in America.

Of course, Mr. Skeptical here was fraught with skepticism. I asked him, "Rated by whom?" He didn't know.

So imagine my surprise when I discovered that the haunt he visited, The 13th Gate in Baton Rouge, was voted #1 in the annual list of Top 13 Haunts in America as compiled by none other than HauntWorld.com!

Now, the owner of HauntWorld and I have had some disagreements in the past, but even though I think he's a crazy a-hole, if he puts your haunted house in his annual Top 13 list, it means your haunt is pretty damn good. And to be at the top of that list, well, that really is saying something. Their Top 13 list is basically accepted throughout the industry as "the" official list.

So I am insanely jealous because, even though I have previously been to several of the haunts that made this year's Top 13 list, I have never been to a HauntWorld #1 haunt in the year that it took the #1 spot. My dad accomplished that feat before I did, and he didn't even do it on purpose. I am insanely jealous.

On a side note, I just discovered that there actually is a haunted house that runs here in Gallup on the 30th and 31st. You can bet I'll be checking it out.

You should be jealous, 13th Gate is amazing. I have been to several of the haunts on this years top 13 list, 13th Gate is tops with me.

I had the opportunity to visit there this summer, and was blown away by their level of detail. I had also been to Rocky Point in Salt Lake before it closed, 13th Gate beat even Rocky Point in the detail department. If you're ever going to make a trip to see a haunt somewhere else in the country, I would say 13th Gate is where to go.

From this years top 13 list, I have been to 4 of them. From a uniqueness, and intensity standpoint, Erebus is a must see, (probably a close second with me). From an acting and costume standpoint, Netherworld. Finally for an over the top, extreme standpoint, House of Shock, it made my skin crawl.

Which brings me to a feeling I have, and have shared with many. Go see all the haunted houses, they're all different, and all unique in their own way.

So in my opinion, the ultimate haunt would have, 13th Gate's detail, Erebus's large scale and unique scares, Netherworld's actors and costumes, and House of Shock's extreme over the top scares.

Only if time and money were no problem!

Oh I am jealous now!!! I was trying to figure out if I could make it down to see this before the season ends, but no dice. They are also doing a lights off flashlight tour the first couple of weekends in November.
