I've been loving the Silent Hill series since the hoary days of PS1. Oh gawd, those loading times were murder.

These are some of my all-time favorites, in no particular order:

The Suffering Action-packed gorefest in a PRISON where the inmates are guinea pigs for all manner of unspeakable experimentation. Warning: This game has a serious potty-mouth.

The Suffering-The Ties That Bind a sequel to the above, natcherly. This game needs its mouth washed out with soap. These games have some of the most creative monsters I've ever seen, this side of Silent Hill.

Siren This game is a mind-trip, shifting back and forth through time. Very creepy.

Fatal Frame 2-Crimson Butterfly I am still trying to weave my way through this one, but it's a helluva lot of fun. No guns (cripes, not even a friggin' baseball bat, for that matter), just a supernatural camera with which to do battle. Really different and very chilling at times.

Resident Evil 4 Oh Mercy! This one blows everything else in that series right outta the water. 'Just sayin'.

God of War Wow. I thought that my heart was going to burst out of my chest at some of the high points in this fantastic game. I think that this one definitely fits the bill for horror.

Darkwatch Very unusual theme, Old West meets Evil Dead, I guess you could say. This game has incredibly cool, highly-stylized graphics and the action had my fingers smokin'.

Agree? Disagree? Any other great horror games that I ought to check out?

Oh yeah, the Half-Life games have some great sci-fi horror moments as well. Good times!

I have been loving Rise of the Dead. Its basically a classic B-movie made into a video game, with endless zombie killing action in a mall.

Before that I really enjoyed Condemned. It was scarier than most horror movies if you played it with the lights turned down. It is a very dark game and you have to use your flashlight to see everything as you explore. Oh yeah, and the old department store, complete with creepy department store music, with all the mannequins (some of which aren't just mannequins....) would be a perfect haunted house theme.

Condemned sounds terrific, Tye. Mannequins really creep me out-that's why I have three in my house! Did you ever see an old movie (from '79) called Tourist Trap ? It makes very effective use of mannequins as objects of terror.
I still don't have an XBox, but they keep coming up with good reasons to finally get one...like Dead Rising and Prey.

Incidentally, here's Rev. Noch's review of Dead Rising:

I played condemned one night with all of the lights off, the volume turned up and my friends would ocasionally try to make me jump by grabbing my shoulders
