Shenanigans

Hey everyone! I'm new to the boards, but I was just curious.... Does anybody know what haunted houses might have some good Michael Myers'? I play Michael in various events, and I'd like to go somewhere this season to study how other people do the character. Any input would be great!

Welcome to the October Lounge, Shenanigans. I think that "...Slaughterhouse Gulch" will feature the Michael Meyers (sp.?) character because they are planning a veritable "Who's Who of Horror"...you know, all the big names like Jason, Freddy, etc.

Anyone know how this works out with copyright infringement or licensing rights? I don't know, it's a grey area to me but I would think that there would have to be some sort of deal with using all of the big names.

Agreed, its one thing if you have a guy dressed as Jason in your haunted house, its another if you claim that you have Jason and other big horror characters in your house. I'm sure the characters are copyrighted and this hardly falls under fair use. Likewise with the use of the alien image from Alien at Alien Terror. I'm guessing they have made some sort of agreement....

It seems to me like the agreement would have to be between the owner of the character and the company making the costume. Surely the character owner gets some kickback in royalties from the sale of that character's costume, right? If so, it seems like that would be where your claim to compensation would end. What are you going to do -- tell someone that they're allowed to buy your costume but not wear it? Or wear it but not scare people?
That said, I wonder what the implications are of making and displaying, say, a Michael Myers costume yourself. That would be an interesting lesson in trademark law... I might have to look into that further now just to satisfy my own curiosity.

My understanding is that the problem occurs when you use it in a haunted attraction and charge people to see it or use a likeness without permission to promote your product. You could have what/whoever you want but once you start billing them as an attraction and charging people to see it you are profiting off of licensed character without permission and could be in for some legal liabilities. See now I could do it, you could do it, anybody else can provided that we are using it for entertainment only purposes or in our home haunts.
Anyway, just curious how this is gonna unfold because I, for one, would dig a "neo-classic horror" haunt, I don't think I've seen "Freddy" since Celebrity. Oh and if you want more information about legal liabilites of using a licensed character I bet you could ask Leonard Pickel about that one! http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif
