View Full Version : I Loved The Asylum

I just went to the asylum yesterday and it was great. The thing I enjoyed most was the fact that they really stuck to the theme this year. There wasnt one room in there that didnt make sense. As always they had great actors. I stuck around and talked to the owner afterwards and he told me that they actually hired two acting directors this year, It definantly shows. In my opinion this is the best show they have had at this location. There were some scares that I recognized from last year that didnt do the job because I knew they were coming but the amazing job of the actors really made up for that. All in all this is a must see attraction this year if you miss it you will be dissapointed.

My impression of the asylum was completely different. I also went last night, and didn't enjoy it very much. The actors were okay (some better than others) but I felt like that they needed more. However, some of them were really good. I really did enjoy the guy up front walking through the lines and scaring people/getting them in the mood. Also the guy that told the rules before you entered. Now, I didn't go to this house last year and have no idea what they changed, but from what I heard last year it was really good and I didn't think it was that good at all this year. Maybe it was the pre-teen kids behind my friends and I that were pushing us way to fast but I felt like it was too dark to see anything at all. Now I'm not advocating for daylight type conditions but I'm pretty sure I got jumped out at and didn't even have a chance to be scared because I couldn't see anything at all. I don't know, I went right at the end of the night so maybe the actors were tired by then, but I just wasn't impressed.

You had to go in with other people? I got to go in with just me and the guy I was with...it was really nice because we didnt have to worry about other people. I thought it was great....and I agree....there were a couple of "dead spots"

I didn't feel as though it was that great either. Some of the stuff was awesome and the actors that they had were good and did scare me but there were ALOT of boring spots. I kept on waiting for it to end and it didn't for a lonnng time after the blanks spots. I feel that this place could be good but they need to put a couple more things in it to get it there.

I was very disappointed to see that a haunted house was in a tent. A TENT. The whole time I was going thru I could not get that out of my head. I wish they would relocate to a field or something. I can't wait to go thru others. God a TENT....

Yes, because that's why there are 5 haunts above Scream Park (who pays for advertising). Check your facts before you post, man. But I do agree that it does leave that thought in the back of your mind about paying for advertising and the ratings...

Is he the bloke standing outside the haunt? Mr. Psycho Ward? I was thinking he had a great British accent...maybe that's why!!! http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif He didn't think I was very polite...just because when he said there was no smoking, I asked, "What if you're on fire?" Sheesh...I thought the Brits had a sense of humor (or rather humour)! I thought he was great...kinda reminded me of Peter Stormare...the crazy doctor in Minority Report.

Y'know, an enclosed environment, especially with unpredictable October weather, makes perfect sense to me. I'll take a tent (which screams "Circus!" to me) over the usual "strip mall" haunt any ol' day.

Know what I dont get???
half of the haunted houses in Colorado have tents. Primitive Fear, Asylum, and Brutal Plante all have tents. and yea it help for the whether but what does it metter, when you are scared I doubt that your thinking about the tent!

We went last night and thought it was pretty good. The make up was good, acting was good, the strobes were set up well to be really disorienting, the mechanical scares were well set up too. I saw a couple of the my favorite things to find in haunted houses (I won't mention them here) and the $5 coupon for VIP makes the price pretty close to the general admission. No waiting in line!! http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
Only bad stuff: a couple of the scares were broken (inevitable) and there were times when you just walked through halls with nothing going on in them.
Oh, I didn't even notice it was in a tent.
Overall it's definitly on of the best haunts this year. http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

A mall atmosphere could be great, if only they'd do a full-tilt "Dawn of the Dead" scenario. That'd definitely be worth seeing, in my humble opinion.
I know that they rent the strip mall spaces because it makes a lot of sense from a business perspective. 'Nothing wrong with that.
The main ingredient needed is creativity. That, along with talented performers, can make up for a lot of limitations where venue is concerned.
If I do make it to that Haunted Forest out in Franktown, my greatest hope is for decent weather.

Ok went tonight. I think its sucks I can only enjoy the ones on a monday cause that is when I am off from scream park and that limits what I could go too. So I atleast tried to get some in. Let me first start off by saying I hated the british door guy so much I loved him. He made me spit out my gum. AND it was a fresh piece too. Just finished eating dinner and needed it to freshen the breath. I should have breathed on him he would have changed his mind. He was a great touch to get you in the mood. The house had some good spots that I liked. I really liked the electric chairs. I just stopped and watched for while, but then figured I better move to give the actor a chance to stop and relax. I thought the walking through the fridge was also very cool. On the bad side I thought there were alot of empty wall space. Alot of empty hall space. I liked the guy on stilts I think he was, or he was really tall, as he blended along the wall. The first bed scene was way off cue. We had already walked out the room, when the actor turned around and set the prop off. The werewolf was also off cue, and came up after we left. Now maybe that was what they wanted, but it just seemed like everyone wanted to wait till you left wait, not everyone, let me be fair, but some seemed to wait till you left then move and follow. That just got to the point where you saw them and when you passed them and that point you were like ok missed it and focused on next spot. Overall, I could see on a weekend with alot more people the rest of the dead areas could come to life and really make this a fun one. I dont know what I think about letting small groups one at a time to go through to the end before letting the next group go. But I guess that helps drag it out for the small groups in line. I did feel a couple of costumes and props were out of the theme, but overall, I liked it. I cant say, cause I cant enjoy more houses, if they are a 9.5, but it was nice to see that even houses like this one has actor turnout problems like all the rest of us. Just goes to show to everyone that all houses have great ideas and potential, its all in the play of the cards. I would recommend this house on the weekend and see how they fill it out. I might have to go back just to see myself.

I would have to say that the weekend is robably not the best time to go. On top of the already constant groups, we don't get much time so reset our scares, on top of that many people tend to stop and block hallways, so by the time I get to scare them they are a massive group and I can only scare half of the group (since my room is little) but yea I suggest coming during the week it's a lot less busy, and a lot more fun

THIS PLACE SUCKED.
I'm not sure if advertising bought this place to the top of the list, but the bottom line is I was not impressed. I felt like I was walking through a maze of black painted OSB board with black plastic tarp hanging above, oh wait... I was. The actors were decent but they had no set to work with. Every time I turned a corner some guy jumped out and tried to scare me. After the first couple I was ready for it. Totally predictable. This is the first time I used this site to choose where I was going to go but that will never happen again. If this is the best place in Denver than we are all in trouble, otherwise I have a hard time believing anything that comes from this fabricated site.

Hi there! I'm one of the official HD critics and I am insulted by your insinuation that the ratings were somehow bought. Not only did I really love The Asylum on the night we reviewed, but I have gone through on my own, and with my husband, three more times since then.
I can respect that you didn't like it for reasons you've posted (that's what the boards are here for)...but don't come here as a new user and start making accusations that you've pulled out of some dark orifice of yours.
Thanks for visiting!

well technicaly it is true that you can buy your self a high rating for your huanted house but not in the way that most people would think. i do not think these peopel at huanted denver are on the take i mean come on we have all ben getting there reviews here for years now. some times i think there reviews are good and some i disaggree with but its stupid to say that the asylem bought its rating. that jst sounds like a bitter person who's huanted hose got a crapy score if you want my oppinion.
any way if you want to buy a number one rateing with money this is how you do it: buy a great buildig, buy tons of materiels to build a better set than any other huant, hire the very best actors, buy realy cool stuff to put in your haunt to make it scarey and for good measre spend some more money to hire profesionals to build and run it. when you are done you should have a tenstar haunt as a result of your money and thus you have just bought yourself a top spot.

i have to agree, i know for a fact that the haunted denver people have walked through more than once because when they rated it i was a guy in a dress asking about my lost puppy and last time they came in i was the crazy doctor. and i must say that the sets are very well designed. did you not look around my room only to see that itr looks like a very well drawn anatomy book, or maybe look at the props we use??? and honestly we got number one because we stay in character and can actually scare people to the point of crying. it was either you that was in a bad mood, or you came with all of the drunk people

The official HD review for The Asylum is up over at haunteddenver.com...these go into more detail about what each of us loved about The Asylum this year. I didn't even mention some of the great art on the wall, like the DaVinci anatomy drawing and the big scary face (don't know what it is, I'm usually running at that point!). Also, they have the best-timed set of strobes I've ever seen...and they use it to great effect every year. I think it nearly gave my husband a seizure and he hit at least two walls because of it...like a pinball bouncing off the bumpers http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif http://www.octoberlounge.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif !!!!
My husband gets to go to one, maybe two, haunts a year, so after I've reviewed all of them, I decide which one to take him to...this year I chose The Asylum and he loved it!!! And believe me, the pressure's on to take him to just the right one...since it is usually his only haunt.
There was constant excitement, noise, and energy all the way through and, yes...the actors stay in character. I've noticed a lot of differences in the few times I've gone back this year, but even though each time was different (different actors, etc.) the energy level was consistently high...and that's what made me really truly enjoy this haunt.

Again, I'm not picking on you, I am just curious as to what constitutes something good in your book? It's entirely okay to disagree with an opinion, particulary if you are partial to one thing and not so much another but constructive criticism goes much further than "THIS PLACE SUCKED." I'm not talking about the "I would've like this part better if... but overall you could've done better, great job guys" crap, I mean "this part sucked because this was poorly executed, here is an improvement." sort of criticism. Maybe if you can cite examples (as I ALWAYS do) then you can contribute to what changes you want to be made for next season. If it isn't for audience feedback then people never know what to change and "THIS PLACE SUCKED" comments lead the powers that be to believe that you 1) work for another attraction or 2) have no idea what you're talking about. Just look at Thomas Hewitt's posts and the plethora of knowledge gleaned there; do you think people are gonna turn to him for advice?
I may be full of it a lot of the time and offer little valuable but at least I can tell you where to improve and what I hated with a little articulation.

amen! seriosly people, how could all of you be so mean. this haunted house was a little on the short side this year, but it at leased deserved to be in second. (right behind FOC obiosly) and thank you to all those wonderful actors who kept me and the rest of my group screaming. I think that you guys did great! My only complaint is that strange clown room that had absolutly nothing to do with the theme, then it turned alamost directly into another exucution. The strobes were amazing! but taking into consideration that the more scared i am the more i say strange things to the actors, Me nd my group were just talking about how we were coocoo for coco puffs and insisting that we were all imperfect clones of oprah winfry. so that means that we were super scared. so I hope everyone talking about how horrible and suckey this haunted house was, just think about how the opionion of a person thats coming from the magority of the visiters is coming along!
